Taking care of the environment is one thing I love dearly. Through that I created an initiative called “Plant4Life” which aims to contribute to combatting climate change through a planting trees campaign. Countless of trees are cut down daily due to several reasons including requiring them for fuel. As a result, this not only contributes to air pollution but a decrease in the number of trees available on our earth resulting in disastrous shortcomings. These disastrous shortcomings include global warming which has disastrous side effects on its own. To revert the damage being done the planting trees campaign aims to plant at least 1000 trees wherever it is implemented.
Apart from planting trees as part of the campaign I have taken part in presentations at my previous school together with my peers. We went around different class doing different engaging activities and planned sessions which helped our fellow students be more aware of the climate change issue. Afforestation goes hand in hand with education through this initiative to create a bigger impact.
The planting trees campaign under the Plant4Life initiative so far has done one project whereby 1000 trees were planted with a goal to plant more in the future, aiming for 10,000. Upon my start at UWC EA, I aim to spark a care for the environment culture around the school. Introducing UWC EA to this campaign would be great as it would increase awareness for an issue most take lightly. With climate change worsening as days pass by especially with the intense heatwave occurring across Europe, continuing this wouldn’t necessarily reverse the occurrences but create a contemplation environment.
Upon starting at UWC EA, it would be an opportunity to continue the efforts being done. Starting a club which educates not only our fellow students but teachers on climate change is one step towards raising awareness. Taking advantage of CAS, this could be a great way not only to complete required hours but give back to our planet as well in the process. Visiting nearby schools to plant, educate and spread awareness is one thing I envision doing.
Throughout carrying out environmental related activities, a care for the environment has been sparked in me that before was lower than it is now. It has opened my eyes to seeing how much our planet needs our help. It has shown me the strength of unity because if together so much can be achieved such as planting 1000 trees in one day. If more people join in the count number surely would increase resulting in greater impact.
In the future the current goal for the service is to plant 10,000 trees in total as a start. With an increasing collaboration there are chances of this number escalating to 100,000. With an increasing collaboration this service project wouldn’t end at the proximity of UWC EA rather spread region wise or even nation wise. In my country the number who care for the environment is low. One aspiration I have is to shift the mentality people have that most usually take lightly. Regardless of the wild fires forecasted on the news, animal extinction; the belief people have is quite low.
In all hopes, this would change.
