UWC Mostar

I came to UWC with a goal to become a better version of myself, as well as to try and make the world a better place. This is a big goal but even the smallest steps make an impact.
Nowadays, there is still a lot of unnecessary hate in the world, including racism, homophobia, protests, wars and many more. If I could reimagine tomorrow, I would wish for these things to end. I always feel happy if I make people feel good about themselves and find confidence in their body, race, sexuality or religion. I think those are the things one is born with, therefore, there is no need or place to hate on things we cannot change. However, for some, the need to be in power or just make their self-esteem grow means more to them than some basic human rights and needs. As a result, they are often hateful people. But hate has never brought any good to the world.
One of the benefits UWC gives us is the opportunity to meet different people with different points of view. We try our best to be open-minded to hearing someone else’s opinion, even if it is not the same as ours. In this year spent in Mostar, I changed my opinions on many topics because of the information I heard from others. Expressing our opinions and debating whether something is right or wrong is a thing we do on a daily basis. I am beyond grateful for that opportunity. Sadly, not everyone is open to learning and accepting someone else’s opinion.
History is studied in order not to make the same mistakes and learn from them. However, things like racism and wars do not seem to have an end, even if people know that only pain comes as a result. As the famous Latin saying goes “Historia magistrate vitae es”, history should be our teacher, not something we just hear and ignore.
Currently, we may not be able to personally change the world and end things that have been a problem for centuries now. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing we can do. Raising awareness among our peers and on social media is the least we can do. Step by step, people are getting educated and this reduces hate in the world, even if it’s a small amount. UWC is a movement with the idea of making young adults aware of the world around them. I think this mission should be spread more around the world as it can only bring more good. I am beyond happy to be part of this community and I will always be grateful for this opportunity as it’s made me be able to become the person I always wanted to be.
