Maira Gupta, Grade 11
UWCSEA East Campus
If I had to say which is the most asked question to a high school student, I would say it is - what do you want to do in the future. Not that it's wrong to ask this, but be it friends, family teachers, one always gets asked this question. Now, I have some friends that have a clear answer to this that they respond with promptly, without any hesitation every time they are asked it. And then there are others who are more undecided, or don’t have a clear decision of what they want to do.
I personally am someone who is very interested in business. Obviously thus, as you might have guessed, my dream, outside of UWC, is to start my own business and create impact on the world through my idea/product. When I think about some of the most commonly used inventions today such as phones, laptops, TV’s, smart watches etc, I think to myself that all of these must have seemed impossible and unimaginable before they were actually implemented. It's like that saying - it always seems impossible until it's done.
For me the key to a business idea is identifying a human problem, be it big or small and working around it to make a practical solution. It's definitely easy to put it in these two lines but we all know the endless number of hours of work it takes and the dedication, hard work and commitment. It's not easy, but a quote I read once stuck with me forever- there is no elevator to the top floor, one has to take the lift. This only goes to say that the road to the top, the road to success is always challenging.
Now, I am not some professional business person to be talking about what makes a good business, but I think being a conscious consumer can teach one a lot about business. Being analytical when buying products, when reading newspaper articles about companies etc is something I believe will help me take small conscious steps towards my larger aim and goal. I aim that with these daily actions of being analytical in viewing things and understanding companies, it can be made a part of one’s lifestyle, way of thinking and train one better than a theoretical course can teach.
Observing the way businesses for example associate themselves with social causes, launch unique promotional campaigns, tie up with celebrities, engage consumers through perks and awards, memberships, discounts etc informs one about how businesses work and operate at a basic level.
I hope that one day I can do something in this passion of mine, and while my steps today seem small, I am confident that by being committed to one's passion will always pay off.
Reading success stories of entrepreneurs today, it wasn't that they became who they are by sitting down one day with the aim of inventing a product. Most stories that one will hear are about identifying or facing a real life problem and having the urge to solve that problem. And with the urgency and need to solve that problem, comes to life a product that benefits thousands of people and is most likely to become a successful business in the future. Obviously the hope is that someday, somewhere, I can be doing something similar, or something even greater :)
