THOBIAS MALEKELA, Grade 11
UWCEA Moshi Campus
There are times when I sit down and think a lot, yes I have to think about the future. The way I will live, the way I will generate income, the way I will be a role model for my family, my children and my community in general.
Studying primary school in a normal school is probably what made me realize that I am creative, because in my school we studied with children from different classes and reading was not given much emphasis, so most of the time we did things that were not in the classroom.
For example, some people made clay, some people wove rope balls, others carved masks and so on as long as everyone did something that would make them happy.
I don't remember the first day I picked up scissors and paper and created things except I remember that scissors, paper, glue and a ruler were my best friends all the time. I remember the day that I realized that I have a talent for designing things using paper tapes or boxes, it was the day that our vocational skills teacher instructed each student to bring his artwork to be graded in the end of the year exam.
At first, I didn't realize that every student in our school was admiring my work, but as time went by, more students surrounded me to admire my great creativity. I designed and built a very nice box house, it was nicely painted and fenced with a big gate. The satellite screen and lights made the work even more beautiful, indeed my teacher made me happy when he said "imitate Thobias".
From that time I started to do more creations, I remember even when I was in the seventh grade, my school bag created by myself using a box was definitely an attraction. Until now, my greatest talent is the creation of paper, I can certainly design almost anything using paper or boxes, such as invitations or greeting cards, house or car designs, cards and wall or table decorations, cabinets and so on.
I still haven't been able to find the name of the designer of my design, but I just call myself "paper cut designer". I remember even on the day of the UWC interview I did something, of course the committee liked it so much that they took it.
I like to be a designer because a designer is a person who thinks a lot, because in order for your creativity to have an unfiltered taste, you must think every day how to improve it and create new interesting things. The habit of thinking a lot has made me not only think about my creativity, but I have also been thinking about how I can solve the challenges that exist in my society. If everyone has the habits of a designer, that is to think and find answers, then we will have made a big step in building a better world, a world with solutions for every problem.
Although I am a designer, I really like economics and the profession I want to specialize in is economics and business. My biggest dream is to become a big businessman in the future, so the classes I will take while at UWC are Economics, Business, Environment, Mathematics and Languages.
I feel very happy when I calculate Mathematics and then cool myself by designing Mathematical Set Instruments, surely being a designer gives me happiness.
Among the clubs I plan to join in UWC if they exist are art and environment clubs because through creativity we can solve various environmental problems such as environmental pollution. And the competitions that I like to participate in are creative competitions.
How do you feel about being a talented economist?! Talent is happiness, creativity is a smile!
