BEYOND NUMBERS

Daniela Sofia Galeana Gaspar, Grade 11
UWC ISAK Japan

Project week is a very important part of UWC ISAKs curriculum: an entire week to expand our interests with the help of professionals, courses and the creation of a project.

For my project week I focused on the distribution, movement, transformation and appliance of resources. Within this focus area, I had the purpose to expand my knowledge on finance and investment, especially its methods and processes, as I am passionate about pursuing them in the future.  With the help of Lin Kobayashi, ISAKs founder, I was able to get some amazing learning opportunities. I was given the chance to share some very insightful experiences of extraordinary people in the world of investment and finance. As part of my project I had the honour of meeting with Mamoru Taniya,  and Shin Horie, both very accomplished figueres in the world on investment banking.

Mamoru taniya “joined Salomon Brothers in 1987, where he became the youngest Managing Director responsible for the regional trading division for Asia. He founded Asuka Asset Management, which was one of the first independent hedge funds in Japan at that time. In addition, he founded the private equity fund Mercuria with DBJ. He also serves as an Investment Committee member of East Ventures.”
Shin Horie is “cohead of Global Single-Name Research (Equity and Credit Research) for Goldman Sachs and is a board member of Goldman Sachs Asia LLC. He is the former director of the Japan Equity Research Department and the former manager of the Korea and Taiwan Equity Research Departments”

Before meeting them I already knew that their technical skills and knowledge were amazing but quickly I realised that it wasn't only their intellect and skills that stood up, their strong belief in the power of education and leadership as a tool for creating a better world was truly inspiring. A clear representation of their understanding of the relationship between people, resources and our world. Taniya and Horie San are very different people, their career paths and choices couldn't be more different but they do have one thing in common, they are resilient in their work and socially in their values and ethic.

I can confidently say that this experience has helped me shape my values and their words will carry on with me the rest of my life, through my career and on a day to day basis. Putting the effort into critical thinking and building up from my mistakes.
