Emile Brozaityte, Grade 11
UWC ISAK Japan
Do you know that one specific place that gives you such a special feeling that you can not describe. It is so unique, so nostalgic, and so safe. Well, to me that place is the right shower-room in my UWC ISAK residence.
As I walk into that steamy warm room, I never know what I will find. Someone singing their heart out to their favourite song in the shower? My dear friend Muhyadin brushing his teeth and listening to political interviews? My friends eating ramen and calling family back home?
The shower rooms in my house were the ultimate socialisation spot. Personal call - shower room. Deep conversation - shower room. Eating - shower room. Relationship problems - shower room. Work call - shower room. Resolve drama - shower room. Art project - shower room. Perfect for every occasion.
That little room, overpacked, cluttered with Amazon things became so close to my heart. Because that is exactly where I cried to my senior Anna about my life problems.
Exactly there I had the most thought provoking/eye opening conversations with my dear friend Mayte while doing my self-care routine.
There I had long calls with my best friend back home while eating the best ramen on Earth.
Shower-room is where we gals got ready for prom together.
Shower-room is where I discovered some of the best music. Where I made new, true, actual heart to heart connections.
To be honest, I have probably been in the shower-room at least once with everyone from the 24 people in our house.
One experience that I remember extremely vividly is our 5 hour hangout in the shower-rooms with Mayte.
It was one of our last nights in ISAK before leaving for summer break. It was a nice, quiet night, almost everyone was in their rooms sleeping.
We made some ramen and tea and headed to the right shower-room.
We entered the warmly lit damp room. It felt like it hugged us like a blanket. We put the two chairs in front of the mirror and sat while resting our legs on one another.
We say that those chairs are for putting your clothes when you shower, but we all know what their real purpose in that shower-room is.
It was so cosy, so safe, so tranquil.
It felt like the whole world had stopped. Like there was nothing on the other side of the walls. It felt like it was just us and all that is best in the world was there, in that room. Sailing around us.
That is the shower room effect on me.
We talked so openly. Soul to soul really. Lulled by the milky feeling of the shower-room I opened up about my deepest worries and insecurities.
After sitting there for quite a while we migrated to the left shower room. For what reason, I don’t know. There the late night craziness kicked in and we laughed like we hadn’t in a long time. We were running out of breath trying to control our giggles to not wake up others. We laughed at nothing and at everything. Then, we made a pact to see to each other's growth as people and made plans for our self-improvement summers.
The kind of feeling that I get when I so much as think about the UWC ISAK R1-11 right shower-room is something so light and so heavy at the same time. So close to my heart. So indescribable. And that is why it is so precious to me. I hope we all find a place like this for us.
