Usman Nyallay, Grade 11
UWCEA Arusha Campus
My life at Prince of Wales was not one full of many engagements as the academic requirements were very high. In Sierra Leone the pass mark for every internal (school exam) is 5o% but not fair enough at Prince of Wales the score was at 10% higher than the normal score in the country. You can imagine in a school like this in which 500 students will be admitted but at the end of the school year as low as about 100 students will be assured a place in the school for the next academic year.
Attending a school as this requires maximum focus on school work but non the less even in a school with such requirements we had school clubs like the anti-violence school club, patriotic advocacy network, mind care peer school club, literary and debating society, interact school club and more.
The work and aims of all these clubs were specifically extracurricular which had greatly aided those who were involved in them.
Ah! Are you seriously worrying your head about which club I belonged to and what was my involvement really? I love suspense but I am going to be more precise here.
My principal goal is to help others in order to make society a better place. In accordance to this gaol of mine I was part of the mind care peer school club prince of Wales branch. The mind care peer school club is a movement that was initiated by the mental health coalition Sierra Leone to help educate our people (the Sierra Leonean community) about mental health and also teach them how to prevent themselves from mental illnesses.
You must be bored with all this long talk of mine but how can I just tell you about my involvement in this club without enlightening you on what it’s all about. My role within this club was a very significant one which saw me work as the mental health consultant this position came as a result of my interest in healthcare.
You probably have an idea on what the work of a consultant is and mine was no different.
In spite of my own personal contributions towards achieving the aims of the mind care peer school club which I diligently performed from my initiation into the club till I left (the school club but still a member of the national coalition) I did learn a lot of things of which cooperation, resilience, initiative ability, creativity and a mind or sense of rendering assistance to those whom deserve it were key.
This experience is one which I will carry with me where ever I go and as such I am sure I will be able to give all these things I have learnt to the UWC which I believe would aid me and most importantly help those whom I will be meeting at the UWC as such virtues are very important in striving to create a better society full of people of love and concern. Remember we all have a role to play in making this world a better place than it is today.
