My all time favourite book is called Children of Blood and Bones by Tomi Adeyemi. The book was published in March 2018, but I found and bought it in 2019. This book is a tale surrounding African myths and legends, and became a best seller worldwide.
Tomi Adeyemi is a Nigerian-American author and creative writing coach based in Los Angeles. She teaches creative writing online, and graduates from Harvard. She went on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, to talk about her book becoming a movie in 2019. Her book has won many awards such as the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy, the 2019 Waterstones Book Prize, and more. In 2020, Tomi was named to the TIME 100 Most Influential People of 2020 in the "Pioneers" category.
Although it’s been a while since I read the book, it’s still one of my favourite books. Seeing a book based on West African folklore becoming a best seller worldwide, winning awards and the fact that the author was African herself was what made me love the book even more. The story itself is extremely captivating. When I first found the book, it was the synopsis that intrigued me, it said “They killed my mother. They took our magic. They tried to bury us. Now we rise.” The power I felt seeping through those words immediately drew me in and I do not regret it at all. The story’s main character is called Zelie Adebola, a powerful young woman fighting to return magic to her people in the land of Orïsha after it was eradicated by a ruthless king, hell-bent on wiping them out completely.
This book was extremely eye opening. Not because of magic, but because of how strong the female lead was despite all her losses, how she still fought to achieve her goal no matter what to the very end. This book is amazing, and is part of Tomi’s series, Legacy of Orïsha. It's a good read and I recommend it to all bookworms.
