Sarah Alfonso, Grade 11
UWCEA Arusha Campus
There really many interesting UWC traditions but one thing that I love so much and really sounds interesting and exciting is the outdoor pursuit. This are a series of activities that basically involve things such as hiking, mountaineering and many others.
There are different levels for this and IB require around five level. There are plains and peaks and also reefs and biking. The plains involve hiking and moving on plains especially in rural areas. The peaks involve mountain climbing. And UWCEA has a mountain close to it known as mount Meru. Its pretty amazing because it’s just behind my boma called Baobab so we shall use that for one of the outdoor pursuits. And not far from here there is Kilimanjaro mountain which we also use for the outdoor pursuit.
The reefs mainly involve surfing and I have seen a few photos of this and it looks amazing. personally I can’t swim but I love water and we have been told that we had a new teacher who is a surfing instructor so he will help us with the swimming and teach us how to surf so I really can’t wait to experience that. I have just arrived in school and have been exposed to many interesting stuff around campus so am sure I will be loving every bit of this experience. The outdoor pursuits and moments am going to spend with all this amazing people will be worth it after all. Everyone around here is really nice so I guess everything will be interesting.
A D2 student told me about a tradition that has existed and it involves music auditions, I can’t really wait for that moment. I actually sang for them and those who heard my voice said it sounded really amazing and told me to sign up for the auditions.
My article STAGE talked about the common hall at school and I did see its and go in and actually tried singing in it. It’s amazing really. I could actually imagine myself singing as in my small Arusha Got Talent. I can’t really wait for that moment to stand on the stage and sing or talk.
These are basically the two traditions I love and I advise everyone to really take a chance and learn this.
