Usman Nyallay, Grade 11
UWCEA Arusha Campus
As the first son of a family in Sierra Leone you always have a great responsibility in your hands to lead by example in life especially when it comes to your education, as you are seen as the role model for your siblings and your very best is required from you by the people around.
My journey in education is one which has been full of very memorable moments and of these memorable moments one which I can proudly say I was happy about is my selection as the deputy head boy in my junior school. For every intelligent student this is something which might mean less important but for me who considers myself an average student, I always try to make the best out of what I get. This first of meant a lot to me because it saw me achieve every boy’s dream of being part of my school’s prefectorial board. Being part of the prefectorial board gives you respect, power, recognition and most of all self-esteem which are things I always thought of.
In school, precisely prince of Wales school kingtom the tradition is that one can only make it to the prefectorial board by being amongst the most outstanding students in school which was assessed through our first two years in junior school.
I started this fall in a very good but not a satisfactory manner as the requirement for being in the waiting list was way above my average at the end of the first academic year. Although this failure left me disappointed, I was able to pick up the broken pieces of my self and try to get back in to the list of incoming prefects. In JSS 2 I did all I could and I eventually made it into the list and amazingly was also among the top three students in the school at the time. With my dedication, determination and inspiration to make it to the top I was eventually able to see it come to reality.
During the first semester of JSS3 (Grade 9) I was unexpectedly nominated for the head boy position. Actually, on that day I was absent from school and on my arrival n school on the next day I was informed to go to the staff room for the head boy interview. At the end of the semester I was really pessimistic about the Whole interview since I was not confident of making it as I saw my self as the underdog in the race but after two weeks It was time for the outcome of the interview results to be announced at the general assembly and we were asked by one of the school’s senior teacher that we should write our names on the list of those who were to be selected as ordinary prefect but something unexpected when I was about to write my name I was asked not to and my thoughts at this moment were full of sadness, disappointment and regrets but during the announcement my name was surprisingly called as the deputy head boy. I can still hear the chants from the students at the assembly as I walked up to the podium with humour to receive my badge which I cherish so much and I also came to know that “it’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting”.
I have anticipated many moments ones similar to this that I have discussed above and also those that are not related to this moment of mine. A clear one is one that I want to make a very good mark and legacy at the UWC Arusha campus as I am the first Sierra Leonean to attend the UWC arusha to be specific and I also anticipate a very good moment in sports as I will be joining the football team on my arrival at the campus. These moments I am looking forward to are ones which I will be working effortlessly to get the moments I desire at the UWC.
