The Lounge

Gino Ndiko, Grade 12
UWCEA Arusha Campus

When I joined UWC, there were many places to hang out and relax after a long day at school. One can opt to go star gazing on the field at night or swimming at the pool on a Sunday afternoon.  One can also choose to spend their weekends watching series or movies in their rooms if they are in the mood for a calming afternoon. The school also has a path around the school which is suitable to take a walk and enjoy the scenery around the school. Simply roaming the school with your friends could be enough to calm down amidst the rigorous academic curriculum. Despite the fact that most people opt to spend their free time off campus, the school has certain amazing facilities to enjoy leisure time with one’s friends.

One of the most calming places was the DP area above the canteen with a pool table and table tennis table. During orientation week at night. It was a wonderful place to get to know my new classmates over a round of pool or foosball. There is more than enough room even to play cards with your friends or just simply look over the school and enjoy the starry sky at night. It was always filled with laughter and joy. With the comfortable sitting areas, I was always able to sit quietly and complete some assignments or have a wonderful conversation with one of my friends. I often go up there after a long hard day in order to calm down by looking at the view. It is quite beautiful, especially during sunset as the sun rays illuminate Arusha town.

My most memorable moment in the DP area was when I decided to learn how to play pool. Since most of the people who played pool were boys, I was eager to be among the few girls who knew how to play. In the beginning, I was given the basic steps to play pool by one of my Kenyan friends. It took me a while to actually make a proper connection with the balls and the cue. Nevertheless, I did not expect to be brilliant on my first try, hence I did not give up. With time, I put effort into improving my skills every day since this had become a hobby I truly enjoyed.

I remember the evening I played pool with one of my schoolmates and one of the staff members. In spite of the fact that I spent so much time trying to better myself, I was not as good as them. Though this could have affected my attitude, I wanted them to teach me as much as they could so that I could be as good as them. Since they were very fun people to be around, I often found myself DP  area playing pool while trying to learn Swahili as they are both Tanzanian. I will never forget the only time I was able to beat one of them during a round of pool since I was filled with so much ecstasy. Through all the joy, perseverance and personal time spent in the DP area, I knew the DP area had become a special place for me.
