The UWC sports weekend

Zita Gloria INEZA TETA, Grade 12
UWCEA Moshi Campus

Spending the whole weekend playing sports is the best way I could spend my weekend. To me, a weekend well spent is the one I spend with friends enjoying the sports I love. The UWC sports weekend is one of the events that makes me feel the love for sports; an event that truly reflects the UWC spirit. During the weekend, there is no time to rest; no time to think of the next game. All you have to do is to carry your gear from game to game, gather all your strength and win as most games as you can.
This annual event is one I look forward to every time, waiting for the time I will have to play netball, football, basketball and touch rugby all squeezed in a tight schedule. Last year, I played football and basketball only and felt so exhausted. Playing four sports this year will be almost impossible and more than exhausting; but I am willing to try anyway! The adrenaline rash and the pressure are what makes this event so special. However, for this to happen, I will have to make sacrifices and plan well for the event.
First, I will have to carry snacks everywhere. Good snacks and water will keep me hydrated and energetic. I know I will need this to perform to the best of my ability in all sports. Last year, I almost fainted when we had to play with Orkeswa (the defending champions) at lunch time, straight after a football game. The fact that I had not eaten in six hours made me feel the heat even worse. I intend to learn from this especially that I will be doing four sports instead of two. I will have to make time to eat and hydrate. I believe keeping a schedule will help.
Comfortable gear is the next thing I have to get. Uncomfortable shoes might give you a hard time during games. Making sure I wear the shoes I like will keep my motivation up. A change of clothes is crucial too. I can’t forget how uncomfortable it was wearing the same sweaty school jersey for more than five games a day. Not only was it disgusting, it was also discouraging and I intend to change that too. I want to wear a fresh jersey every time I step on the field.
Giving my all is also one I am looking forward to. I want to give 100% when I step on the basketball court, the netball court and the football field. I want to make a difference every time I take a ball in my hands, I want it to give rise to winning a game either directly or indirectly. There is no such thing that hurts as regretting something you should have done that you didn’t do. In the last sports weekend, I at some point gave up and started playing just for the sake of playing. I lost my focus and played with no purpose. I intend to make a difference this year. I intend to go to the gym, work on my physical endurance and come back stronger. This coming sports weekend will be my time to shine.
The sports weekend is one of a kind and I intend to make this one special as it would be my last. Making new friends from different schools, reinforcing the connection with my teammates and giving it my all is what I intend to bring to this annual event. Hopefully, this will be the legacy I leave the UWC community as I leave for college. I want it to be the event that everyone on campus looks forward to not because of the sports alone but because it’s a good opportunity to support friends, learn UWC values and have fun.
