Lilia Bellahcen, Grade 12
UWC Costa Rica
Once I receive my IB diploma at UWC Costa Rica, I would like to pursue my studies in a university where I will be able to flourish at an academic and at a personal level. I would see myself in a liberal arts university that has a flexible curriculum which would allow me to fully explore my interests. Preferably, my future college will be known for the quality of its faculty and for its research and internships opportunities that will allow me to develop professional and interpersonal skills. Enroll in a STEM curriculum for the vibrance natural sciences bring to my soul and for what they could potentially bring to my country and this world. Ideally, my future profession would combine mathematics and development for I have a great passion and interest for both.
As an Arab and African woman, I want to contribute to impactful discoveries for humanity. My principal goal for college and beyond is, before anything, to love what I am doing. I want to wake up every morning and feel the excitement of a new day at work go through my whole body. And when I get home at the end of the day, I want to be happy with what I achieved during the day and craving to do more the next day.
Physics and Mathematics secrets expand endlessly. These are fields that will allow me to be constantly improving and that will never let me get bored.
The perfect scenario would be to pursue my studies in the U.S. and first acquire professional experience there before, later on, going back to Morocco, my native country. In Morocco I hope to start my own project and eventually help my country to take a step forward, towards development. As I plan to evolve in the biomedical engineering field, I want to make new medical technology more accessible in Morocco.
Parallely, I hope to have an active personal life that will include working out, having a reasonable social life and developing a strong mental health. I would use sport as a tool to reach these goals. I have a fervent passion for sports in general, but the most exhilarating one for me remains climbing, which I discovered only four years ago. In this mere time, climbing led me to become physically and mentally more flexible and stronger. I saw myself quickly improving in this sport, pushing each time a little bit harder, and never giving up even when my arms, legs and breath couldn’t take it anymore. I was forced to take a break at UWC because of covid, but I would love to continue playing this sport after high school.
Finally, my biggest hope for the future, and the most meaningful at the end of the day, is to be happy with whatever I am doing, be proud of what I am achieving, stay healthy and be close to my family. Money comes and goes, but the love you get from the people you surround yourself with and the love you have for what you're doing will stick with you for the rest of your life.
