Veerle Koops, Grade 12
UWCEA Arusha Campus
Every year, UWC East Africa organises The 24 Hour Run. This is an event where different teams are on the move, usually walking, in order to raise money for a scholarship. The students are very passionate about this purpose, as most of them have been allowed this opportunity because of their scholarship. UWCEA is a school that is very focussed on community building. I believe that the 24 Hour run is a big contribution to this. I have only had the chance to participate in one run, and this is how I experienced this.
Our school has two campuses: this year the run will happen in Arusha, last year it was at Moshi campus. For that reason, at the end of the morning all of the participants from Arusha left drove with the school bus to Moshi, and at 2PM it started, and ended at 2PM the following day. Many different teams were present, among which was a non-stopper team. The teams had different teams, clothes, mascots and even places to rest in between. For the different rounds there were often different activities, such as walking with unfortunate footwear. At all times during the run, people were awake, talking or enjoying the music that was playing loudly.
The purpose of the Run is to give others the same opportunity we received. It is an event that contributes to the process of the UWC placement that is taking place every year, and the general growth of the organisation. It is a sign of how important all of the students that went through this process themselves find the morals which they all share. Receive and give back. Education is a force to unite people of different nations and cultures, for a peaceful and sustainable future.
Last year, I loved being part of The 24 Hour Run. This year, I am again part of the organisation of this event, and I simply can’t wait to see how it will play out when we host the Run at Arusha campus for the first time, coming January.
