ABOUT

United Worldwide is a global UWC magazine co-founded by Arusha Sahai, at UWCSEA East Campus, Singapore. United Worldwide captures the essence of what it means to be a student of the United World College. Our goal is to share thousands of untold stories that may otherwise never be heard. To be able to "make education a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future", United Worldwide becomes a unique solution - bringing together UWC students from around the world.

“United Worldwide aims to embrace the UWC mission and core values by truly uniting the UWCs across the globe through an online magazine centred around acknowledging the beauty in our diversity.”

The United World Colleges are genuinely diverse in location, and genuinely diverse in character.  This is a movement wide strength.  Amidst this diversity is a further important but very different strength: that of unity of purpose.  Our students are like-minded young people not only making their way in the world, but also seeking to make the world a better, more peaceful, more sustainable place. Connections such as those created by the new publications therefore provide a mission-aligned service to us all;  they allow us to connect with people at the same stage in life, looking at the same, same issues, in very different contexts.  These connections allow us to deepen our own thinking, and to make a contribution to the thinking of others; and I know many friendships have already been sparked by this project.
Admiration and thanks to Aryan and Arusha, who have led this project from concept to implementation.  There is much to be proud of in these pages.

Aryan Sahai, UWCSEA East Singapore

Through each edition, I want to celebrate the hard work that everyone who is a part of United Worldwide has put in. From all the staff members that have helped make this a possibility and to all the students that spent hours on end writing these articles, I want to say a heartfelt thank you. I am extremely grateful for everyone’s contribution throughout this whole process of bringing this dream alive. I hope United Worldwide truly unites us across the world, brings our family together, and helps us build lifelong friendships and connections.

A special thank you to Mr. Nicholas Alchin (Head of Campus), Mr. Gavin Dinsdale (Head of HS Activities), and Ms. Kate Levy (Head of HS English) at UWCSEA East Campus, Singapore, for their support and guidance.

"The stigma surrounding mental health issues is decreasing, but is still very much prominent and real"

An issue that Northern Ireland continues to struggle with has once again come to light: three people have lost their lives due to suicide, sparking social media attention. Coming from Derry, a city located in the north-west of Ireland, has its challenges, even within the small statelet of Northern Ireland (Gillespie). The three bridges within the city are infamous for contributing to one of the largest and most noticeable issues: suicide.

"I'm no longer scared of my own opinions, my speech for once not tired out by mental rehearsal"

I came wanting to be a particular individual and ended up being myself. Sometimes I imagine the admission officers, sitting around a table, picking out assorted sets of students, the ones who go at their own pace, with snack-sized friend groups and evenings filled with naps, the popular ones with a tick-off resume and a social flair, the Type A’s, the studious and so the list goes.

"I witnessed true desperation and suffering when I visited the Cancer Institution of Dar-es-Salaam"

That is when I realized how the underprivileged persons of my country faced severe accessibility challenges. I only understood the relentlessness of this statement upon entering the first room in the largely underfunded hospital, with peeling wall paint and darkened tiles. There was a pungent lingering odor of an odd mixture of medicine and blood in the cramped space. Stark moans of pain resonated from every direction;
