Margareth Mathew Mombo, Grade 11
UWCEA (Arusha)
Do you have that specific area at home where you seem to be most comfortable? Despite every part of the house being cosy and giving you the “home-y” feeling. Do you feel better when you’re sitting at that specific couch that is perfectly symmetrical to the TV, where the AC blows at just the right amount; or is it at the balcony, where you can feel the cool breeze blowing right across your face as you watch the beautiful sunset and enjoy a warm cup of home-made hot chocolate? To enhance it more, you add that one pillow to fix your posture, just so you enjoy the spot fully and experience the peace that comes with it! However, your “cosy spot” is not always perfect, that is why you do your best to bring it as close to perfection.
Well, the IB diploma has acted as this cosy spot at home for most of us in UWCEA Arusha for the past 8 months now. This program has offered us exceptional privileges and courses that will benefit us even after we’ve finished the course. One of the few gifts that come with this is realizing that not everybody gets this cosy spot. It’s that one golden ticket to a great future that only you can mould! Yes! You get to choose your path because the IB gives you everything you need. Nevertheless, just like any other cosy spot at home, it comes with its flaws, and that’s why you fiddle with it to make it as comfortable for you as possible. The IB can get quite tough, and gets tougher as you progress, but that doesn’t elude the fact that it’s what we need to be successful. So the only way is to adjust, so add that pillow and make your journey worthwhile. It will disappoint you at times, but hey, what’s a rainbow without a little rain, right? Throw in that smile! It’s all about enjoying the process and having fun in whatever you do. Put in the effort and everything will fall in place; enjoy updating your CAS, have a great time with that Extended Essay, put on a cheerful grin while tackling your OP trip and you will be surprised at how the experience will eventually morphe into an unforgettable yet beautiful part of your life.
So fellows, the same way you adjust the couch at home to attain the best possible angle for you to comfortably watch “that show”, calibrate the IB experience to match your best personal interest, put effort and fun together and create your ideal harmony. We all have the potential to become legends. The late Kobe Bryant once said, “Everything negative - pressure, challenges, is all an opportunity for me to rise”. So dear associates, let’s all rise up and give our best three-pointer shot that will leave a permanent memory and legacy to all of us.
