W4 A3 – A Dream to Spread Education
I have had the dream to become a teacher since I was young. When I was small sitting inside a classroom, I was intrigued by the magic of teachers explaining things to us and how we magically understand them after the explanations. Teachers also had the power to help us resolve conflicts between classmates. I found some of them to be very influential in the ways I think and act.
Now, I discovered teaching as one of my greatest dreams and talents, because I love the pleasure of explaining things to people and helping them understand what I know through that process. I get a deeper knowledge and insight through what I teach. For example, I never noticed so much about how the characters are formed in the Chinese language until I explained it to foreign learners. The characters which take such diverse shapes are built up from structures such as hieroglyphs, and it was one of the sources which ignited my passion for culture and diversity.
UWC education attracted me because it tries to make education equal, or, as one of the ancient philosophers Confucius put it, “make no distinctions in who receives education”. With its scholarship programs and unique model of learning, I recognized the power of differences among us, and I still would want the diversity and inspiration within the UWC community to keep my passion, so I wish to travel around the world and teach in all campuses. I heard stories of different lifestyles which I would want to experience in the future, but I also found the importance to spread my own culture. I am interested to see how my perception now differs from the future, as a teacher.
On the other hand. I would love to hear more people’s stories and voices through education and potentially inspire students with my experience. And since UWC students come from diverse backgrounds, I deem it a precious location for mediators in the role of educators to start igniting sparks. For example, when I befriended someone from a rural region in China, different from the city environment that I knew, I was more aware of how difficult it is to produce food and a more authentic view of the challenges of rural life, different from the idyllic image I had before, so I wish that through my work, I may potentially influence some of my students to recognize and appreciate the beauty within differences in people.
At the end of the day, I wish to achieve more equality, knowledge, and awareness in the world through education, by making it more accessible to people. I would perhaps join teaching programs in remote regions and has different thinking to what they have received at that place to expand their views and access different possibilities.
I feel a mission to pass forward what I received in UWC and give back in my way, as a potential teacher who has a dream to educate around the world, spread ideas, and pass on possibilities.
