Aarav Sharma, Grade 6
UWCSEA East
Hi, my name is Aarav and I live in Singapore. I am a student of UWCSEA. In my family, I have my Dad, Mum, and my little brother. My brother is a really playful and irritating person. My dad is the person who always manages to rebuke the wrong person, and as for my mom, she just makes sure that no one apart from herself in the whole house is having fun.
My hobbies are playing the guitar, using raspberry pi, and making puzzles and I also have a huge interest in drawing.
I started to play the guitar because one day mom said “You annoyed me the whole day, now no more screen time for next few hours’’. I was thinking about what to do. I sat on my bed, then out of the corner of my eye, I saw the guitar. In my head, I was thinking “What could possibly go wrong?”. That was the first day of my guitar adventure. I learned how to play the guitar on youtube. Currently, I know these chords: A, C, D, E, and G. I have also played and recorded about 7 songs! That is the peculiar story of how I started playing that guitar.
Since I was 8 years of age I have had a big passion for coding. I first learned Scratch programming language to create a few games. Afterward, I decided to challenge myself and start to learn a more challenging coding language, Python. I then learned how to code about twenty-five different types of fun games using Python code language.
Covid-19 has really been a struggle in our lives. When we were in phase 2 again, only 5 people could be together. My friends said that the first 5 people who say that they are coming down on a WhatsApp group, were allowed to play with each other for that day. The only rule was that you couldn’t ask your parents to type for you. So, I opened my computer, wrote a program to say that “I was coming down” and the program worked! Now I was the first person to type in that group chat and was the first to go down to play :)
When I was 11 years old, I got a mini coding computer called the Raspberry Pi. I used the Raspberry Pi to program projects from switching on LEDs to creating an automatic bin, to a robotic smart car. My upcoming future project will be to make a robotic arm.
During the Chinese new year holidays, there was a lot of cardboard in my house. I used my imagination and I created arcade games that are not related to technology. I have made Plinko, Cornhole, etc. It was so much fun playing and creating these cool and fun games. I definitely recommend you try this out as well.
When I was very young, my mother taught me how to make puzzles. At that age, I always thought, that finding just 1 piece out of 2,000 pieces was useless. But I got motivated, and then I was able to find that right piece. I repeated the process again and again until I finished the puzzle. I also love to make different kinds of puzzles, so far I have made 2D and 3D puzzles. The 2D puzzles I made have a range of puzzle pieces from 900 - 2,000 pieces.
I have a passion for my community and I want to contribute to it, so I took part in Service Executive and was selected as the Chairperson of it. I am planning to do more for the bigger community around me in Singapore. So, I am planning to put all my puzzles up for charity. All the proceeds collected will be donated to the few charity organizations with whom I am planning to liaise.
Also, I have a huge interest in drawing. I am trying to draw all 47 characters from a video game called ‘Brawl Stars’. Every day I try to draw for half an hour, but sometimes my brother manages to convince me to do a few drawings for him to keep! I am now learning drawing from youtube tutorials, so for me, I am open to a wide range of drawing tutorials!
Since Grade 1, I have been attending math exams. I have so far been taking part in Kangaroo and SASMO math exams. These two exams are measuring me globally, at the same time I have been earning at least one medal per year. This year I got a Bronze medal in SASMO.
Next year, I will be entering middle school. I am really excited because I will get my own computer (a dream for each child), also I will be getting a lot more exposure to different types of labs to continue making things. As you read the last few paragraphs, you probably realized that I love engineering. I had once fixed a drawer of my cabinet. I have so many new ideas in my mind that I want to bring to real life. I just can’t wait for Grade 6.
From the age of 0 months to 11 years of age, these are the main incredible adventures that my family has exposed me to. I am just imagining what could be the next possible adventures that will keep me motivated, challenged and excited...
