Ama Obeng-Sakyi, Grade 12
UWC Thailand
In UWC Thailand, we have traditions like Africa’s Week, Spanish Week, etc. Although I wasn’t around for Africa's Week, it’s my favourite so far. Being given the opportunity, and for a whole week at that, to showcase the different cultures present in Africa is truly a blessing. Africa’s week happens in November, the first term of school. Each year it’s different because there are new students and new organisers. From what my seniors told me, last year wasn't as fun due to covid, but since covid restrictions have lessened greatly we’ll be able to do a good job this year. Especially because this is the first time there have been so many Africans in UWCT. The african culture in UWCT is extremely diverse, students from all parts of Africa, North Africa, West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa and the South of Africa. We all love to dance afro dances (a type of dance specific to Africa), and Africa’s week is full of it. We each get to take turns during the course of the week talking about cultures and traditions in our respective countries, the playful rivalries between our countries, such as Ghana and Nigeria. And one of the best parts of this week is the food! African food is the best in my biassed opinion, and during that week lots of it is made to represent so many countries and students are welcome to try them. I can’t wait to help organise it and connect with my fellow Africans in new ways. Another great part of this week is the traditional clothing we’ll sometimes wear to showcase our cultures. Our traditional outfits are the perfect example of how unified yet diverse the African continent is, and teaching people about all this is one of the most exciting moments to look forward to. I just know that week is going to be magical and activity filled, with laughter and fun times throughout, and I just can’t wait
