After 6th Period: Beyond the Classroom at UWC

Daniela Sofia Galeana Gaspar, Grade 11
UWC ISAK Japan

UWC is not all about academics. No matter which of the 18 schools you go to you will be able to find dozens of activities to join. Some of them you will do just for fun and others will help you shape who you are and form a significant part of your experience at UWC.

Last year I joined the Journalism club at my UWC, the Isak insider. A club dedicated to publishing journalistic articles related to global news, politics, economics, climate change, and anything related to our school and our community. With faculty supervision and the great leadership of my upper classmates as a club, we were able to publish our paper every week, both in a digital and printed format.

For the first part of the year, my participation was very limited by the online situation and the inconvenience of time zones. Whenever the club had to meet it was around 3 am, so it was clear that I couldn't be as active as I wanted.

This, of course, made me feel unaccomplished at first but after having to deal with it for months it forced me to approach it in a different way, knowing there wasn't much I could do about the situation it was a matter of resilience and choosing to remain in the club and realizing that I couldn't weight my personal value of the quantity of work I was able to produce.

This activity changed the way I view work and extracurriculars in general, although it's tempting to join as many activities as you can and try to overwork yourself in order to feel like you are doing something it's also true that you will have the ability to get a lot more out of doing only the things you have and actual interest on and to work with balance and create limits between your life and work. Doing so will impact the quality of your work and preserve your mental health and self-esteem, something very much needed in anyone's life., journalism last year helped

But clearly, this isn't something easy to do, trying to change your work ethic from one day to another is simply not going to happen. Thankfully I had a lot of help at the journalism club, not only was I surrounded by passionate friends and great writers but also a group fully committed to understanding each other's struggles and supporting each other whenever challenges arise. With the help and understanding of my peers, as well as the great organization and quality that I was able to participate in once we were already on campus, journalism became the most important activity of my UWC experience last year.

For next year I will continue to participate in the Isak insider. I hope to be as supportive and understanding as my classmates last year and explore new forms of communication outside my comfort zone. Trying to help the club evolve into something as innovative as UWC.
