TENDO MATTHEW NDAWULA, Grade 12
UWCEA Moshi Campus
Asking me to mention a person or group of people at UWC who have impacted my life is a task worth achieving. I call it a task because it means that I have to go through all the experiences I have and try to pinpoint one that would be appropriate for this article. To be honest with you the first thing that comes to mind is the word bubble, but do not worry by the time I’m finished you will know what I’m talking about so sit back, grab a cup of tea and join me in the bubble.
It all started at the beginning of 2021, my school had just received a number of COVID( ughh don't like that word) cases and proceeded to have a two week lockdown(much longer that it sounds trust me!). This meant that we were all isolated within our specific dorms and we were not allowed to interact with others. At the beginning it all seemed kind of annoying because we had all experienced a lockdown prior to this in 2020, so getting into this one, moreover when we still have classes seemed almost impossible for me. Fortunately, I had my friends to keep me going.
My friends and I started a show called the Kivuli Bubble. Kivuli being the name of the dorm we were in at the time and Bubble depicting our pandemic lockdown circumstances. The aim of this was for us to show people the life we were living within the school bubble. We recorded scenes of us playing games like basketball, American football, us simply fooling around in our room and many more.
The main reason I chose this experience is because of the lessons of love and joy that I received being a part of this group. We managed to change what some would call a bad situation into a positive one. We ended up bonding more with each other. In fact, despite being locked down, we managed to connect with many of our other friends from other dorms. Most were pleased to watch the videos, some found them incredibly cringe and others just laughed at us, but that is all the beauty and love that is within UWC. The school managed to challenge my character in ways I’d never thought possible, because going into the lockdown I was more less bitter, but getting out I was changed. I ended up being challenged to look at the positive side of things more, love as much as I possibly can and laugh as much as my abs could allow, all in one bubble
