Hana Sato, Grade 12
UWC Costa Rica
UWC creates many opportunities for its students. Although my dreams and goals are set even before getting accepted into UWC, this movement has provided me with a much wider range of opportunities and methods to achieve these goals. Growing up in a developing country such as Guatemala, but also knowing the social systems and structures in Japan, I am able to be aware of the lacking point of Guatemala. As in many other developing countries, Guatemala has an immense absence of basic social services, such as education or medicine. Conscious of this reality, after graduating I want to perform in social interactive jobs, especially, to be able to give back to my countries.
Since my childhood, I have always wished to interact with communities through medical services. Therefore, I have always longed for studying medicine. I would love to graduate from a medical degree and subsequently achieve a masters degree in medical imaging (radiography) , anesthesiology, or Hematology. I want to become a specialized doctor since in Guatemala there is a lack of specialized treatment, and even existing, most of them are highly costly, not allowing the majority of the population to have access to it.
After gaining some experience, I would like to get involved in international medicinal NGOs. N not only Guatemala, but various countries are constantly experiencing medical crises. Therefore, I would also like to be able to assist not only the people in my country, but the ones I would be able to support. I am especially interested in organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, The International Red Cross, or Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Furthermore, another pathway I would like to consider is international politics or international governmental relations. Since I have two nationalities, for me, cultural interaction and international support are relevant topics. Therefore, I would like to further study international relations, with a masters' degree in geopolitics. Afterwards, I wish to be part of the Japanese Ministry of External Relations and create politicas bonds within Japan and other countries, especially Latin American countries, that although may have multiple cultural differences, can enrich both countries' development.
UWC has opened me countless future opportunities, as well as teaching me values to treasure more the cultural diversity and the people who make it possible. For my future, I would love to perform a social role in which I can support these people. Although there are two drastical perspectives, I believe that both politics and medicine have that possibility. My main goal is to achieve international level interactions and professionalism.
