Munira Nurbhai, Grade 11
UWCEA Arusha Campus
“Brrrrriiiiinnnngggg”, you hear the school bell ring whenever it’s time for recess.
As students crowd the cafeteria like how sardines are packed in a can. My friends and I quickly grab a seat on of the six, rounded wooden tables with benches around them. The tables are covered with a green shade on the top…more of a strainer because we sure as hell know that shade is good for nothing. Never rescued us from the pouring rain nor the scorching sun.
The tables are placed in a rectangular rocky frame pointing towards two rusty canteens mostly offering the same food but varying tastes. One of them is run by a very kind petite lady who always adds a little candy for us whenever we purchase something while the other, is run by a very arrogant man who is always crying about how he never has spare change! And of course not forgetting the fact that everyone is shouting over their heads about the others wanting to get the snack or the cold drink first.
The aroma of delicious food fills your nose as you approach the two canteens. Always in a dilemma on which canteen to go to since they are both so close together, I invariably end up going to the kind lady’s canteen. My kindness to other people has solely been because of my mum and dad. They would always help the needy and treat everyone respectfully while urging me to do the same.
As soon as it struck 9 30, we are all out of classrooms looking forward to getting a break from the 4 boring walls, a very dusty chalkboard, monotonous lectures, and a chance to hang out with our besties.
The cafeteria holds a great lot of memories. From stealing each other's food to ordering that “one person” whenever we want something from the canteen. It’s all pure joy and happiness.
One day all of my friends and I were sitting together eating lunch. Recess was the only period we were able to hang out together, most of us being in different classes.
I had just come out of a surprise Biology test and was really upset about it since none of us were prepared. I was in a foul mood and my friends understood that immediately!
Knowing me in and out, they quickly rushed to the canteens and bought me my favorite foods, drinks, and candy knowing my love for food. I was genuinely over the moon pleased that I was blessed with a group of amazing friends who were my second family.
I quickly gobbled up all the food feeling content. Not a while later there was an absurd joke made by my best friend. She said and quoted, “Heard about the new restaurant named Karma? There’s no menu: you get what you deserve”. Uncontrollable laughter filled the air resulting in carbonated soda literally shooting up into our unsealed nasal passage and out of our nostrils. We were a mess by the end of recess. It was all about making memories, laughing uncontrollably until your stomach starts to hurt, and debating as if we are in an actual competition.
As much as I will miss my school’s cafeteria, I look forward to making new memories at UWCs while enjoying Mehjabeen’s cooked food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hopefully, I’ll be able to sustain her food for the following two years.
