Paul Ochen, Grade 11
UWCEA (Arusha)
Having risen through different levels of education for over 17 years now, I have incessantly queried what the essence of school is and why humanity cannot ostensibly do without literacy. Moreover, studying at the United World College East Africa - Arusha campus has challenged me to learn from and embrace a culturally-endowed school setting. What, then, is the purpose of education today?
Nelson Mandela, a world-renowned political activist, once quoted that “Education is the most powerful weapon which one can use to change the world.” Noting the profound relevance of education, he made that statement and pointed out that learning is a propitious instrument that has the aptitude to alter entire human existence. Education could be undoubtedly perceived as the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills to create a sustainable living for oneself. Throughout my life so far, I have been discovering and grasping different lessons from my surroundings, so the need to be educated is inherent. Traversing until one dies, they never cease to learn something new. For a duty to be accomplished, a plan is executed. For plans to be derived, knowledge is employed. And for knowledge to be acquired, education is carried out. Education determines the central basis of every human achievement and mastery. Hence, it is the core of all civilised activity, whether failure or success.
At UWCEA, I study a punctilious programme which challenges and shapes my emotion, faith, imagination, intuition and sense of perception. Through informative lessons facilitated by proficient teachers and rousing after-school activities like ultimate frisbee and debate, as well as outdoor pursuit trips, I have learned to appreciate an education at a United World College. My studying is likewise responsible for my behaviour, taste and somewhat, decisions. Owing to my enriched learning at UWCEA, I have been equipped with indispensable skills in a variety of areas such as ethics, human sciences, and mathematics. These areas describe the definite styles of life of people in my day-to-day community and account for any discrepancies between groups of people around the world.
The value of education at UWCEA is exceeding. Human existence cannot thrive without education.
