One book I really genuinely love is the gifted hands by DR Ben Carson. I can proudly say the author of this book is my role model and I look up to him and wish to be like him one day. The first book of Dr. Ben Carson I read was THINK BIG. A family friend gifted it to me after learning that I was aspiring to be a doctor in the future.
Dr. Ben Carson was a black boy who lived with her mother in Boston, USA. At a very tender age, his parents divorced after his mom learnt that his dad had another family. As young boys, his brother and him had a tough time accepting the separation of their parents but were forced to live through it all. His mom being an illiterate black African woman, she hardly had enough money to provide all their needs. But as a strong willed single mother, she single handedly looked after her kids by cleaning people’s houses in order provide for them.
Growing up in a hard life, Ben Carson really didn’t pay much attention to his studies until his mom made his brother and him go to the library every day to read books. Slowly but surely the reading of books took his attention and he started gaining a lot of knowledge from it. The most interesting part of Ben Carson’s life was that he had always come last in class. He was always the tail and received a lot of capping from his classmates to an extent where he got used to it.
But as he read lots of books because of his mom had, his class grades gradually started improving and he ended up leading his class. The students who used to call him names became the ones asking for solutions from him. He then decided to be a doctor and his dreams did come true. He was the first neurosurgeon to separate Siamese twins joined at the back of their heads and sharing the same main artery. There is this one statement his mom always told him “Ben you can do anything any person can do, you can only do it better” and she always encouraged him to pray.
I personally want to be a doctor in the near future. And when I read this book it always increases my zeal to work hard and be like DR. Ben. After reading the book think big by the same author, it referred me to read gifted hands so I decide to look for it. I actually found it 4years after reading THINK BIG. I was happy to finally read it.
This book is having a lot of hope and regardless of how much a failure in life you might feel like, it helps to uplift your spirit. There was once a time I almost gave up on my dream of being a doctor but at that point in time was when I came across this book and it gave me back my purpose in life and showed me my calling.
My advice to any lover of literature like me is they should try read this book. It’s really amazing.
