GRATITUDE

Munira Nurbhai, Grade 11
UWCEA Arusha Campus

If you would’ve asked me the same question when I was a kid, I would've gone on and on about how I'm grateful for friends and family, a house I can call home, food, and my five senses but as we grow up the smallest of things make you appreciate life. How a mere cocoon can turn into such a beautiful and mesmerizing creature and kids when they get excited over a rain puddle, splashing and jumping, loving the sweet smell of petrichor.

Now, what am I grateful for as a 17-year-old:

●      Family is one thing on my list that will never change whether I am 10 years old or 37- from the moment I started kicking in my mother's womb to the moment I opened my eyes for the first time in the hospital ward I knew I was going to be a momma’s girl. From growing me in her womb for 9 months to breastfeeding me whenever I let a monstrous cry out of my tiny mouth to raising a heathen for 17 long years,  She really is a superwoman.

I wouldn’t be where I am without my dad’s sperm contribution of course. But seriously speaking my life wouldn't have been complete without him as a father figure. His hard work, kind nature, determination, and love for family, has shaped me to be the person I am today.

He lies that he is happy and not hungry just so we can be happy and won’t remain starving. He works hard so he can buy me my favorite barbie doll I have always wanted not caring about his needs and wants.
He really is my superman.

●      The beach, mother nature’s finest. A place where you can forget all your troubles and worries. The coarse and gritty sand, a massage to your toes. To lay under the beaming sun and relax forgetting all your worries not caring about whether the stock market is crashing or if you lost all your bitcoin while the sound waves slowly drift you to sleep.

●      The rules of our family game night; “Do whatever it takes to win”.  My sister and I always partner up so I can avoid my father’s taunts if we lose.  Damn,  that man is getting competitive as each day goes by.
You can see everyone's games faces as the cards are being dealt. The tension is thick, anticipating which team is going to win. Soon the master card is revealed and BAM! We won!! The disappointed and angry look is always so fun to watch while the rest of us erupts into a fit of laughter. I really am going to miss family game nights.

●      The best way to end a very stressful day is a head massage but not just any head massage, one whereby your dad literally drenches your head with warm oil and digs his fingernails into your scalp because he thinks he is uplifting your root hair cells for better growth. You feel pain but you don't want to ask him to stop because it hurts but it hurts so good.

●      I am grateful for the internet. The internet has its advantages and disadvantages but I absolutely cannot imagine my life without it. All the conveniences it offers. Have any questions, Google it! Wanna listen to music, search it on Youtube, Spotify, Apple Music, and so many other applications and websites. Are you feeling lonely, give a call to anyone whether they be in the same city as yours or a million kilometers away. Also, education is now available to everyone, you can be on a deserted island learning through zoom.
