Kenza Filali, Grade 11
UWC Costa Rica
Merging both a rich and rigorous curriculum while having the opportunity to evolve and flourish in many other equally important areas makes UWC a school where peace and diversity are claimed. Every day represents a new opportunity to contribute to our world and every individual being guided by his passion has his place. It is this spirit of community, solidarity, and compassion that has seduced so many people, including me, to apply. This is how I imagine it.
A world where I am defined by my actions rather than being a mere insignificant figure. Even though going far, home means facing the scary and the unknown, ambitions have the power to surpass such a feeling that seems negligible in front of the expedition of a lifetime.
UWC will allow me on a daily basis to challenge and question myself, to learn more about others and myself but also to take action to contribute to the formation of a future of prosperity where the difference will be a source of progress and strength. The multicultural environment is one of the most beautiful features of this school; it is by its presence that we are most enriched. Its real beauty is also that this factor is only a detail when we are too concentrated, uniting our common passion for helping others and seeing further than our own person. UWC is the movement that corresponds to my being; it is much more than an establishment, it is the beginning of a unique experience aimed at mobilizing the world and making the changes it needs.
Today, I get the chance to participate in this vision of the world where I will listen and be listened to, to be fully and voluntarily committed to solving social, economic, political, and environmental problems while receiving a solid education. Living in a healthy place where our feelings are taken into account and where each student pushes the other to be the best of himself instead of embarking on a toxic and unfair competition. As they say, “People need people”. I do not want to be content with little. I want to know my real potential, my desire to learn is so strong that only a system such as UWC that encourages its students to always go further will be able to satisfy me. Bring my vision to the world and share the beauty of my culture, my religion, and my people and to imbue me with those who carry deep in them the same love for their country.
Going closer to the campus life, when we’re taking a break from the world’s craziness, UWC is also about these little moments together that we’ll cherish forever. The waves of laughter, the exam week stress, the ugly crying, and all these deep emotions a soul can express are shared together. Further than its message, UWC is its people. Anyone of those who lived the experience could tell you a story of a late study night reunited and laughing -to cope with what was waiting for them- trying to figure out what their notes were about, or a huge argument about a disagreement that helped them understand a situation better and wouldn’t trade this memory for anything today, I am almost positive that they all have a funny cooking story that turned the kitchen into a mess. All these elements that seem insignificant at the moment become the incredible memories written in the UWC chapter of our lives. The type of one that we can’t wait to tell about to whom want to listen.
As a brand new firstie that didn’t get on campus yet, I can only dare to imagine the impact that the authentic life at UWC could have on the development of the curious and persevering teenager that I am, but I am ready to discover it.
The only limit UWC gives us is our own imagination.
