In the darkness of your room at night, while the only thing facing you is the ceiling, the thoughts passing through your mind are the ones stuck in there the most. Well, allow me to share mine and fill the space in your brain with a couple of fascinating things to think about. Did you ever consider that everything we were taught in school somebody had to once burst their brain about looking for its explanation? Did you ever stop and think how did Galileo once get so intrigued by the fact that an object affected by gravity-free falls? Or better yet, how did someone think of covering our bodies with clothes?
Let’s stick to that one today.
How did our bodies become parts of us that should be hidden with pieces of fabric? How did the “shameful” parts of our bodies even get that title of being shameful? No, let’s not go into that discussion and try and solve another world dilemma. The fascinating part is the clothes themselves and how the clothes turned out to be just the thing that saved our lives.
Let’s start with the first breakthrough when it comes to human fashion: the fur. Yes, bare skin is all the rage these days, but it wasn’t always the case. Researchers now suggest that humans might have developed a less Robin Williams type look around a million years ago. They propose that humans were at risk of overheating their brains if they couldn’t cool their skin by sweating.
Once we lost our body sweaters, we were at a greater risk of exposure to different elements, so clothes turned out to be the way out. It’s hard to determine exactly when humans started to wear coverings, so researchers in Florida did something really cool. They decided to see when clothing lice split genetically from head lice. It turns out that 83000 to 170000 years ago, clothing lice came into existence around the ice age, as assumed, clothes. So, people did walk around naked for hundreds of thousands of years. But clothes have unironically saved our lives so many times since then.
