What really makes a special place? Some say it must be attractive to the eye, clean and warm. As for me, I say it is about the feeling that place gives you, the memories you make there and the level of comfort it gives you. Kijana living space is one of my favorite places on campus. The breeze from the trees, the hammock and the porch are all amazing. Some of the greatest moments I had were right there.
Because I am a person who enjoys calmness and being alone, I often sit outside or just lie in the hammock for a moment of peace. While I don’t like reading books, I like swinging back and forth in the hammock with a novel in my hands. Even when I’m not reading, it gives me a sense of peace. It makes me feel at ease: just pretending that I am reading. If I’m not pretending to read, I often hang out outside of my friends’ rooms and we spend a good time gossiping about who is dating who and who broke up with who. Moments which are often heated, with so many jokes and sometimes fights.
Kijana is not only special because of the sleep but because of my Colombian roommate, who always smells shampoo in her hair. I like that tender smell because it always fills the room with joy. When I am stuck on Biology homework, the smell just feels my nostrils and fills me with joy. What makes Kijana special is the people, especially my roommate whose heart is as tender as her hair. Her way of connecting with people is just amazing! People next door hate us because we are always too loud. But that’s what I like about us: the person I am around her, and the vibe we have together.
During school breaks, our house is almost empty. To avoid boredom, I often play monopoly and poker with friends. These moments always stick to my mind because of the smell of pizza all mixed up with Chips mayai and tomato sauce. It is always special because it’s filled with fights and stealing. There is always someone who is stealing fries from another’s plate or who takes advantage of the power cut to steal money in the bank. On the other hand, my roommate and I dance to Spanish songs even when I do not know the meaning; I just dance!
Kijana is a special place to me because of the birthdays we celebrate together with our house parents every month. With mostly cakes and sometimes cookies, I like the family we make when we meet all together at the porch to sing to “newborn babies”. When everyone sang for me and the other November babies, it almost felt like home. A family, where everyone was gathered around to help us blow the candles and make our birthday wishes. The smell of the candles, the warmth of the people who surrounded me, and the mix of bad and melodious voices all made Kijana feel special to me.
What makes Kijana special to me is the people, the memories and the feelings. While most people hate it because it is the oldest house, Kijana has its special aspects. The people I met in this house are just amazing! While I might not get a chance to stay in “Room 7, Kijana old”, it always holds a special place in my heart. Being there was a blessing. To those who were there this year, do not take it for granted. To the incoming class, just hope to find yourself in Kijana because the memories you will make there are worth it!
