Millycent Yang, Grade 11
UWC Mostar
Roaming around the Old Town, tasting food from corners of the streets, and viewing sunset while sipping coffee would end a typical day in Mostar. With dimmed lights and shadows dancing to melodies that flow and fill the space, people gather to sing and laugh, building a vibrant atmosphere. The rounds of applause and cheering, which are representations of praise for the talented, echo the city along with the chill breeze. Night views from the balcony are accompanied by whispers and chatters, and the following day would be just as exciting and worth expecting.
Not only does the open campus of UWC Mostar enhance the bonding of the local residents with UWC students, but it also provides a better opportunity for community service and devotion to building a stronger connection between individuals. Festivals and social events are held for all to enjoy the city, where people of different cultural backgrounds, races, ages, and identities meet and communicate. Day trips and outdoor activities, such as hiking and canoeing are planned for any lovers of nature to participate in. "Don't count the days, make the days count." The numerous possibilities that make living and studying in Mostar interesting, and the various experiences that fulfill life are what bring people of the same or different interests together.
In this particular environment of compassion and open-mindedness, by accepting and learning from various cultures and people, new perspectives are gained from others. Sustainability, responsibility, and compassion are taught, emphasized, and learned, while the values spread also incorporate aspects of a global vision. To serve this diverse community is fundamental for creating a bond with others, not to mention it provides an opportunity to solve existing issues in the community.
Participating in school events and activities enhances one's determination, challenges one's sense of responsibility and capability to cope with stress. Overcoming those series of problems would mean obtaining more experiences that would benefit one's personal development. Despite the misunderstandings and conflicts that may occur, those challenges would contribute to the growth of a person's character and maturity. Unsolvable problems and issues would be recognized as things that strengthen one's inner power.
Acknowledging what it means to be a global citizen and respecting diversity in the community is crucial, as it means to promote thoughtfulness, sagaciousness, and internationalism. The ultimate mission is to learn and appreciate the differences that people possess, meanwhile promoting equality, tolerance, and critical thinking.
In UWC Mostar, opinions and thoughts are to be communicated in an embracing environment, where ideas and innovations mingle. In each of our own way, positive contributions are to be made through personal action to contribute to our shared world and society. However, to implement such plans and achieve our goals, change is needed from the inside, so that a new version of tomorrow can be realized. Therefore, it is essential to appreciate what we possess, to be determined to make changes and even small differences to this world.
