Diego Flores, Grade 11
UWC Mostar
I am grateful for many things, my friends, my teachers, and even some singers, but the 2 people that I'm most thankful for are my parents: Narciso Flores Peña and Martha Elena. Not just because of the life and the love that they have given me but also because of the great example they are for me.
To understand why she is such a great source of inspiration, you first have to know her.
She was born on July 29, 1974, and currently is 45 years old. She is a woman who lived in Congo (El Salvador), in a state of poverty, although she claims that my great-grandmother and grandmother never allowed for her or her sisters to miss out on something. She always had an idea in her head: she was going to study at the National University. Thanks to my great-grandmother, this idea was always present, who wanted what was best for her grandchildren. She overcame many obstacles, such as the social barriers that always exist despite not being visible. This included a lack of income, which meant that she could not only concentrate on her studies since she also had to work, and the loss of her mother. I love her so much. I am very proud of all the strength she had.
After graduating as a professional, she continued working with so much love and effort to continue getting ahead and outdoing herself. Possibly, by this point, you have already noticed that my mother is a fighter. This inspires me to put effort into everything I do and not give up in the face of adversities that may arise. It makes me fully grateful to her and to life because she, along with my father, gave me many things that they could never have.
But my mother cannot be described simply with an adjective: my mother is many more things. She is one of the most empathetic people in the world and always puts herself in the shoes of others. In addition, she always knows what advice to give and how to perceive the mood of people. This inspires me to be a good person and to share the wisdom she has given me. I can't stop mentioning her solidarity and altruism, as she always tries to help those most in need, whether family or not. It is this that I admire the most and what inspires me the most to be a good Samaritan and know how to notice the needs of my environment. I have taken this on board, and so whenever I can, I try to help in nursing homes or other activities that help others.
This also shows in detail that my mother always makes small details for all my family, and this inspires me to show my love towards the people who are part of my life with actions, not only with words, since the second one is carried by the wind. She is a great Catholic who loves God with all her heart and who always thanks God for everything she has. This inspires me to be a good follower of Jesus Christ and not be tempted to be present every day.
My mother has taught me the perfect definition of what it is to be grateful to a person. A clear and current example is the way she takes care of my great grandmother. She always says that her love is only a small retribution of everything my great grandmother for her. This allows us to notice the great humility she possesses––admirable qualities that arouse the desire to be more humble and grateful in me.
Few people have the leadership that my mother has. She is able to make her teamwork and follow her "until death." This is thanks to her being a very competent, intelligent person, kind and understanding,; characteristics that win the hearts of people in your team and drive them to success. Without knowing it, she became the kind of leader I always wanted to be.
Moreover, the way she has educated my sister and me, shows that
she has a gift for motherhood and an incredible ability to connect with people; I want to develop that gift as much as she does, in the distant future, I hope to develop that gift and give my children the best. Just like she gave my sister and me.
You may think that I portray my mother as a saint, but I am not. She understands my admiration. Still, I have not exaggerated any of the attributes mentioned, nor have I lied about their influences towards inspiring me. In short, I admire in full the being that is my mother, and obviously also the one that is my father. Because of the integral people that my parents are, I find them to be great examples and my biggest inspirations in this world.
