Tara Šiljak, Grade 11
UWC Mostar
The UWC spirit is not just made of school hours and life in and out of the residences. A huge part takes the extracurricular activities, which technically are mandatory in the school system. Still, with the atmosphere and the type of learning process it is performed in, it makes it almost impossible to feel like it’s just a fun after school activity you would pay like a kid to be a part of. Want to know more about mine in UWC Mostar? I suggest you read further.
The inspiration for choosing Music Cas as my first choice and me being so happy for getting it as my creativity CAS was exactly the involvement of music in my life and the life of my family. I come from a family of musicians, in which I’m one of the best ones, considering the fact I play the piano, guitar, drums, ukulele and sing. I took advantage of numbers a long time ago, and I still am trying to learn as many new instruments as I can. I consider music my passion, and being a member of Music CAS with a lot of good musicians with great skills allows me to improve my skills and learn new tricks that I might have never seen before.
During the first session of our CAS, I met a lot of very nice people, among which is the CAS leader itself, Zoe. Zoe respects all our proposals and tips. Everyone also respects when we firsties give advice to second - years and/or firsties and don’t downgrade us for being younger. The first session was just an introduction, but going to the next session, where we actually voted for the song and started playing, that’s where it began. Zoe suggested the song “UndBridge bridge “by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, but later we all agreed on my suggestion of “Otherside “by the same group and “Zombie” by the Cranberries whilst all our peers are more familiar with them. In the Music CAS, I play the drums and sing because the CAS hasn’t had a drummer in a long time and from all the members, we only have one drummer. We learned the songs in the first three sessions, and we are still practising and spreading our playlist.
The important thing is that this CAS inspires me to learn, manage time for all my obligations and include practising in it, to see all the pros and cons of team effort and team learning and learning how to divide tasks between and include all group members in the process. For sure, I can say that I am looking forward to every new session and the renewal of the music room because the current one has its downsides, but we make it work. See, one more thing I learned is working in a bit worse conditions than what you’re used to. You get what you get, and you work with it—definitely a recommendation for all future firsties.
