Mia Golan, Grade 11
UWC Mostar
I am writing from Mostar(BiH), the UWC that is in the heart of a city. Because of this interesting setting, my Camus can be considered as the entire town of Mostar and the places that are visited all the time. I’m going to name the top locations UWCiM where students go and spend their time at. There’s a lot of places UWC Mostar students are known for in Mostar.
The first place is The coffee shop- Vinyl. If you were or are an UWCiM student, you are probably smiling a bit right now. Vinyl is filled with students from UWC from the end of the school, free blocks, and sometimes just watching football with the amazing owner; of course, vinyl has outdoor seating, giving us the opportunity to respect the COVID-19 measures. Vinyl is a place where you can meet people from other residences, study, and drink a lot of espressos. The owner knows everyone and everything related to us; for that matter, he is part of the UWCiM community. Vinyl has pink couches, big mirrors and the constant smell of cigarettes in the air. There is free candy on the counter and an entire segment dedicated to football or, more precisely- Liverpool. Vinyl is simply put the central perk from friends.
On the weekends before check-in, there’s the tradition of going to a place known as called “old men’s”, a name given by the students, because a lot of old men hang out there. It’s outdoors, and it has a small place inside to buy water or lemonade if you need it. We talk, dance and have fun. Old men’s looks like if it was built 134 years ago but in the best way possible.
The last place I’m going to mention, the list could continue for a long time, is... Velic. Now, Velic is technically a school building, but it’s where you spend your time after school when you need to study, where events and tutor meetings happen. So, even though it’s a school building, it is so much more. Velic is right in front of the big school building, in velic we mostly have language subjects, but it is used because of the study room, which is also used for other activities... For example, we had a mental health activity there; it was all about relaxing and trying to ease your mind. So out of all these magical places, which one sounds the best to you?
