Sarah Alfonso, Grade 11
UWCEA Arusha
Since childhood, I used to be daddy’s girl because I was the only daughter and I was a very active smart child. My mom always told me that I could escape from home and follow my elder brother to school at the age of two.
This school was in the refugee camp so it was free for all refugees (I was born a refugee) and we used to take porridge as our meal. The best part of all this in class was the singing that was in nursery school.
When I was five in primary one (grade one), my teachers refused to give me exams (we used to have oral exams then) because they felt I was very young. With tears running down my face, I ran home and reported to mom. The feeling of being denied my rights to education broke my heart as a young child cause at that age I already understood the importance of education. My mom came to my school and talked with the teachers so I was able to do the oral test.
If I am asked to describe myself according to what people say about me, “I am an intelligent, talented, wise and beautiful young lady”. I do believe this strongly too because I see my worth and never let my self-esteem go down.
My education being my first priority, I always strived hard to perform well in all my tests and exams. And stay highly honest in every little thing I do in and out of class. I love the sciences more though I also have interest in the humanities in relation to the subjects I will be offering at UWC. The humanity subjects am interested in is global politics since I love political related stuff but at Arusha campus UWCEA it’s not being offered.
Since I want to be a doctor in the near future, I will be offering biology, chemistry and math AA. This is solely because I am passionate about helping people especially the sick in every dimension of life be it physical, emotional, mental or even spiritual since I am a believer in God. Earlier this year I was doing a Rise project which unfortunately didn’t finish due to some personal reasons and this was based on making people aware on the effect of trauma among children and women. And the solutions I possible gave for this was music therapy to help the traumatized and using creative writings to inform the public.
Am also going to offer English literature and language at HL so that I can improve on my writing skills and read more books. I will also do Economics but that’s going to be at SL, since global politics the humanity I wanted isn’t being offered in Arusha I had to get another alternative.
Apart from my studies, my second priority is my musical talent. I sing quite a lot though can’t play any instrument yet. A sensible person will wonder and ask why am not taking music as a subject? The answer would be “not everything we desire for sometimes is given to us”. So am basically sacrificing music at the moment because I want to do medicine so I have opted to take chemistry in place of music HL. I can’t be a doctor without chemistry. My music spirit light is still burning in me and still will shine out one day. I will do music as part of CAS.
One interesting club I want to join at UWC is the debate club. I simply love debating and competing would be great cause I am a confident public speaker and quite good in putting my points clear. I would also love to play chess though am not a good player but would love to learn and compete in it.
Am not a sports person but would love to learn how to swim and do some athletics. And lastly I would love to do singing competition (I have always wanted to study in America’s got talent {AGT} ) but getting a chance to sing at school will be great.
And lastly I would love to compete in article writings and Essay writings such as this one and writing poems, songs and other interesting journalistic news.
