Usman Nyallay, Grade 11
UWCEA Arusha Campus
The sun had risen for me on the 9th of June 2004 at the 34 military hospital Wilberforce, Freetown Sierra Leone. My dad who was just a carpenter by then could hardly feed himself and mom a naïve young girl coming from the provinces a flame of love between them gave rise to me who was named after my grandfather ‘Usman Juana Nyallay’. Being the fruit of an unplanned cultivation as well as the first son and child from a poor family of three children it has been the responsibility of mine to lead by example for my two siblings (Usman and Rugiatu) to take after.
I am someone who is passionate about a lot of things of which soccer, music, Islam and family stand out as the most stand, beautiful, loving, adventurous are all words which most people use to describe their lives with but for me I beautiful, loving are words that clearly describe my life journey. Hey! come on I may be boring but I also have been in some beautiful situations like my school trip to the military training camp somewhere outside of Freetown one which I cherish and hold so dear to my stressful heart full of love, compassion, determination and the zeal to me some one of essence in the world.
Most people are defined by moments in the lives and since I am no alien, I also have had a moment in my life which clearly defined my entire being. You must be expecting something interesting right like maybe a moment at the cinema, at the beach, school or maybe at a friend’s birthday party or so but to disappoint you the moment that best defines is now as I am writing this article because at this moment, I am honest, humble sincere, loving, and most importantly I am able to relate with you (people in general) at this moment.
If you can be able to think widely then I am certain you can assume how I do see the world in a realistic and idealistic manner full of ifs and buts and ups and downs that tends to bring changes which we should be able to accept and live with.
The world is full of challenges but what matters is how we endeavour to overcome these challenges of ours and come back strong and resilient. I in particular have faced many challenges in life all of which I have been able to overcome. I cannot vividly recall all of these challenges but one that always rings a bell is the one of my illness back in 2019 prior to my Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).not to bore you with words some weeks before my exams I was critically ill and as such everyone me inclusive at first thought I would not be able to take the exams but due to the effort of the medical officers and my perseverance and determination for my exams I made it and not surprising to those who really new me I had one of the best results in my school in that year’s exam (Aggregate 10) .
Wait did I even tell you about my school or should I say schools? No right, precisely my education started at the faith arena international school where I was groomed and nurtured for high school life here was full of happy moments which brought smiles and laughter to my face. After a my NPSE exams which is the local exam that takes us to high school I started a new fall at the prince of Wales secondary (high)school kingdom. At prince of Wales, I was thought After a and most especially hard work.
The journey to the UWC is not one full of milk and honey but rather full of struggle and hardship but I was able to conquer all these hurdles to UWC because I have a set goal in life as “Goals are what give meaning to life” and “life itself is a big question that even google can’t answer”.
