Jesse Musinguzi, Grade 12
UWCEA Moshi
Since joining in M5, I have met lots of people and have made some valuable friendships. The first group of people I met were the boys in my class, who were coincidentally my dorm mates. I feel like evers scince day 1. We immediately clicked, and this sparked new adventures. Having people with similar and diverse experiences made adjusting much easier for me since this was also my first experience attending boarding school. We would always gather in my room and talk all night long about the most random things, even while having assignments due the next day. During quarantine, we decided to start vlogging. This gave birth to 'Kivuli Bubble’ on instagram(Kivuli was our dorm name). We were always ourselves on camera and this added to the authenticity of the experience we were sharing with people in and out of the school. As we moved on to D1, the Kivuli bubble remained as a memoir of our MYP career.
D1 is where I met people who would actually change my life. We maintained our M5 group while still meeting new people. In D1, I became good friends with the D2's, some of whom I didn’t even know in M5. I made a lot of good friendships, but only a handful really added value to my life. One of the few people in that handful was called Andre. A bright lad, he was someone I went to talk to. We talked about basketball since we were on the team. He got me to start going to the gym and also gave me his tips and tricks for surviving D1 and D2. Andre was the most organized person I knew. He was a party guy but a great student at the same time. I always strived to be as organized as he was. Because of him, I found out how I could remain focused and even created timetables. Like I mentioned earlier, Andre and I were on the basketball team, and since he had been playing longer than me, I would go to him for advice on how I could improve. Andre helped me discover my biggest weakness, my confidence. He knew what I was capable of and saw potential in me that I didn’t even see in myself. He always regaled me with stories of when he first started playing. I quickly understood that we had different journeys, and regardless of that, I still picked up so many lessons. We would also go to the basketball court on Friday mornings before school to workout together, and here he would help and give me tips on how I could use my skills to score. I saw improvements in my game and my confidence had grown since the first time I stepped on the court. I learned so much from him, even though we had only started talking the year he was graduating.
Another person that shaped my life’s journey was Mapalo. Mapalo and I were also on the basketball team together. He was the best player on the team and our captain. Mapalo never failed to help me whenever I had a query. After we played games, he’d always pull me to the side and tell me what I did well and what I could improve on. Mapalo also saw in me what I didn’t see in myself and was determined to help me tap into my potential. We were teammates on and off the court. Off the court, he was someone I could talk to, someone I could banter with, and someone who wanted to see me grow not only as a player but as an individual. He’d always tell me to workout with him, and I started to see my game change. There was always chemistry between us when we were on the same team.
Mapalo and Andre were like my older brothers. Before leaving, they’d already made a huge impact on me. My brothers from M5 made school really feel like home away from home and we have many, many memories together. I’d love to mention all the other people who made an impact on my life, but this would turn into my EE. These friendships have helped me understand the UWC movement even better through actually experiencing it. They’ve helped me discover parts of me I didn't even know I had inside me. My perception of things and the world in general has changed since joining UWC, and I owe it all to the friends I’ve made. Meeting people from different backgrounds has changed my life for the better and will forever be the best thing about my UWC experience.
