Mufaddal Badri, Grade 11
UWCEA Arusha Campus
Ever wonder who signs up to attend a single-culture school? That's me, duh. It was both a mistake and not a mistake, in my opinion. Being in a school with only one culture helped me understand my religion and drew me closer to it. I also felt at ease with the people around me, but I was unaware that there was a whole other world outside those doors.
As I became older, I made the decision to enroll in a multicultural school. Due to that, my parents and I had numerous disputes. In the end, I succeeded in persuading them to change schools because, in addition to being confined in a tiny space with a lot of potential left to display, I also wanted more—that is, I wanted to make new friends, I wanted to leave my comfortable existence, and I wanted to dream.
It was difficult to adjust to a new environment the next year at a new school but at the same time forming new habits, such as active involvement in all events, small-talking with new people in the backseats, joining various groups, and—most importantly-sports- it helped me be prepared for the coming years and here I am now awaiting to join UWC.
Obviously, you didn't believe it would be that simple. Not at all, no. “a friend is someone who helps you up when you’re down, and if they can’t, they lay down beside you and listen.” Winnie the Pooh once said. In a similar manner, I had and still have a friend by the name of (censored content). Since our first year of high school, he and I have been in the same class. Being frequently transferred between schools because of his parent's business made him someone who was quite accustomed to such circumstances that I faced-as in being newbie. But he was the one who actually shaped me into the person I am today.
One day, the football forms came out although I obviously enjoyed football, I was hesitant to fill out the forms since I had a history of being shy around people and preferring to keep to myself, despite the fact that doing so was destroying my life. I was sorry every second after the forms were submitted without me filling it out. The bell rang, signaling the end of class, and people began to rush out of their rooms. I was sitting there, waiting for this rush to pass. I was suddenly approached by the guy, who wished me luck at football practice. Being that I didn't fill out any forms, I was both surprised and relieved at the same time. He said, "Well, someone did and the coach won't be happy to see a missing player on the team, so chap chap," to my response of "But but I didn't take the form."
I can't quite describe how I felt at that moment because it was a turning point in my life, but I can now proudly state that I am eager to meet up with my new UWC colleagues in a new location, which is something I could never have said of myself before. I'm eager to join the football team and, who knows, meet someone who is hesitant to take the next step and guide them through this novel experience.
