Overcoming it all

Doreen Ngemera, Grade 11
UWCEA Arusha Campus

I remember my first day of middle school. I remember it fresh as if it occurred yesterday. The excitement I had to start at a new school was one I cannot fathom. The beauty of being engraved in a new environment as I entered a new stage of my school life truly was an excitement for my seventh-grade self. Although the excitement didn’t last long. It still lingered in the air around me but the feeling was replaced by something else. Something far from excitement, rather nervousness.
My nerves got the best of me allowing a sense of shyness to take over my body. That sense of shyness that kept me in my shell. This to happen on the first day is normal. First day jitters are experienced by some if not most. Being able to overcome the feeling, to overcome the anxiety and jitters that prevent you from things some view as simple such as saying “Hi”. Lesson number one is to overcome. As I begin UWC this is an important aspect to have. Overcoming any feelings that would prevent me from making the most of my time at UWC. Overcoming the jitters, the shyness: overcoming it all. Overcoming it all to create long lasting relationships with the people I will encounter at UWC.
Lesson number two is focus. Focus falls in many aspects. At the top of the list is focus on my studies. The next on the same rank is focusing on myself. Previously during middle school, procrastination usually knew the shortcuts to getting the best of me. In the short run, in the moment, procrastination deceived me to thinking it is the right thing to be doing. In the long run it is quite the opposite. Starting at UWC means starting IB. Starting IB requires focus. I intend to do just that. While putting in efforts is one thing taking short breaks, time to recharge is crucial as well. Focus in this case has two parts. The first being my studies and the second being myself and all aspects that come with it. Focusing on all aspects of my life. The physical, mental, social and spiritual.
Time flies makes up the last and final lesson. One of the most underestimated things on earth is time. Two years can seem like one when all is well. The adventure, the novelty two years come with can all fly by in a gist of time. Embracing and living in the moment is another thing I learned throughout the course of my life so far. Whenever I spend time with my friends, the conversations, the quality time reminds me of just that. Time flies. Embracing my time and living in the moment is something I intend to do as well. Throughout the years, not doing so in some cases has not gotten me anywhere.
How about trying to do so?
How about trying to embrace my time at UWC?
Surely it will get me somewhere.
