"For the women who raise hell and have fun doing it."
This is the dedication from Maas at the beginning of the book, and other than being one of my favourite authors is what made me pick up the book from the Young Adult section, and decide to read it. That was two years ago, right after the book was released in 2018, and it is still one of my go-to books when I'm feeling down and need something inspiring. This may be because it has an amazing female lead or because it's based on one of my favourite DC characters, Catwoman. Or it might be the underlying theme of cats. That was probably it, to be honest.
And that's my introduction to becoming a crazy cat lady in the future.
"Catwoman: Soulstealer" is based on the young woman, Selina Kyle, and follows her origin story as she dons the tight black bodysuit and slings around a whip, bringing chaos to the city of Gotham. It follows her struggles as an illegal underground streetfighter and gang member, a Leopard, trying to support herself, and her little sister, Maggie, who has an incurable disease. This is until she is just weeks away from her eighteenth when she's arrested and is subsequently found by Talia Al Ghul, where she makes a bargain to be trained as an assassin in Italy, to save her sister's life. Two years later, Selina returns to Gotham as Holly Vanderhees, her socialite cover, into the upper-class world. She is a completely different girl, set on wreaking havoc on the city that once was her home as Catwoman. She joins up with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, stealing from the rich and keeping it all to herself, along with secrets, a dangerous past, and a mission. Her only obstacle is Batman's latest vigilante, Batwing, yet she finds a romantic challenge in her neighbor, ex-soldier Luke Fox. Selina winds her way into Gotham's deep, deep pockets, waiting for the right time to pounce.
Now, I'm not one for spoilers, and there are quite a few already in my brief explanation, so I'm going to leave the summary at that. If you want to know how it ends, read the book.
However, this one had me bouncing in my chair in anticipation the first time I read it. Sarah J. Maas' writing is unique, captivating, and is full of twists that one never sees coming. The research into the background of the character holds true, for the most part, so DC fans will not be disappointed, and Selina Kyle is one of the best female protagonists I've had the pleasure of falling in love with.
Witty, fun, and exciting, "Catwoman: Soulstealer" is not only based on a strong female character, but Maas has held true to form, writing a dynamic relationship between Selina, and her sister, the vigilante; Batwing, and her cohorts; Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy.
Maas' writing caught my eye when I was just thirteen, with the "Throne of Glass" series. All of her main protagonists are young women, strong female leads that don't let anything get in their way. Romance is secondary to the main plotline, all following the journeys behind these female characters as they battle their way through hardships and relationships alike. Maas stretches the reality beyond the fairy tales, which is where many of her stories get their inspiration from, combined with wicked action scenes and the heart touching emotion that makes people truly fall in love with her characters. The plot twists that seem so predictable upon rereading the book can never even be imagined whilst experiencing the books for the first time. These key aspects of Maas's writing are what captivates me as a reader.
Books are meant to be read, and they let us experience new worlds, meet new people, and experience life all without us having to leave our couches. Fiction provides an escape from reality where we can enjoy ourselves through the art of words.
So, if you're on the hunt for a good book, I recommend this one.
