Veerle Koops, Grade 12
UWCEA Arusha Campus
My current form of education has changed my wishes and hopes for the future greatly. I came to my school, an international boarding school in Tanzania, wanting to become a pro-bono lawyer. This shifted to studying law and art, and then completely going to art school. At the moment, I am at a point in my life where I need to make the decision on which path towards my future. Of course I have stressed about it, thought about it and researched. However, as you probably know, decision making is a process. After straining over the internet, I melodramatically concluded that there is nowhere for me to go. This is for: scholarship, language and course requirements. For now I still haven't found many places, but I’ll let it rest.
I have a love for public art. I have been interested in art for as long as I can remember, but only recently I have realised the prominence of money in art: for example in art as an investment, musea and high profile art buying. Public art is accessible for anyone and, therefore to me, is a means to completing a purpose of art: romanticization of the world. It can have different meanings, and mostly it can provide different experiences for an audience. Light, sound, format and much more can add to this.
At the moment, if I could choose a career I would love to set up public art projects. As a contribution to the communities that form in every place people live, to be enjoyed and experienced by anyone who is interested.
However, for me there is a lot of uncertainty at the moment. That is not a bad thing.
