Freya Aurora Van De Laak, Grade 11
UWC Maastricht
Even though I came to United World College Maastricht back in MYP 4, which was around two to three years ago, I still feel like a newcomer sometimes. I suppose this is because I practically lived in Hong Kong all my life beforehand.
While things are definitely different here, I have really enjoyed my time here in UWC so far -- and this includes the extracurricular activities. Now, I’m not much of a sporty or social person, so
normally.
One day, I walked into my English class, and my teacher sat me down, telling me about an extracurricular activity that she organized called ‘Shut Up and Write’.
Basically, Shut Up and Write is an event where students can come together every month, sitting together to discuss while enjoying some delicious pizza as a treat. There are rooms for discussion and others for silent studying, making it a perfect place for everyone, really.
But what if I could have my cake and eat it too? Well, pizza in this case!
I really liked the concept and asked if I could help lead Shut Up and Write as well. The next thing I know, I’m helping plan the first event of the year.
I wanted to take the initiative, so I reached out to the local Dominos store (yes, you heard that right!) and got in contact with their manager. After speaking for a little while, I actually managed to strike a partnership with Dominos. This has led to UWC getting 2000 of their own custom discount cards.
Yep… 2000!
This meant that we’d get a ton of pizza to feast on. You would think that 20 pizzas are plenty for some students, but I digress. All of them were gone within a few minutes, and it was every man for himself.
Honestly, what’s not to like about Shut Up and Write? I, for one, struggle with studying at home quite a lot, often getting distracted by and also not being in the ‘study’ mood, so this event just appeals to me as a student.
Think about it. If you’ve just settled back at home, who wouldn’t want to just sit back and binge their favourite show in the warm and comforting embrace of their blankets?
This is just one of the reasons that I think Shut Up and Write is amazing. Being in a school environment. Also, there’s Writing Support and other services provided as well, which I know I’ll definitely be paying a visit to when studying for my final IB exams next year.
All in all, helping lead Shut Up and Write has been an invaluable experience for me. I think it’s safe to say that this is my favourite extracurricular activity here in UWCM. I’ve had a ton of fun organizing the events so far, and I’m excited to see where this goes!
