Spring day at Robert Bosch College is the picture-perfect day that encapsulates all of what UWC stands for diversity, education, and sustainability. Starting off the day with gardening, we are confronted with our relationship with the earth and although this sounds a bit cheesy, being outside makes us more empathetic and concerned about it being negatively affected. Even if we dont leave UWC and reverse/mitigate climate change, there is a hope that we are knowledgable and contribute to the solution. In practice, it is a fun time with peers and staff making our campus what we want it to physically look like. I remember the pure satisfaction of putting the last brick of transplanted soil block into our Green Wall repair area while the sun emerged out of the fog despite the forecast saying no such thing would happen.
Once the ball was rolling fresh in the morning energizing everyone, with the itinerary being full, there was a lot to come. Making alfajores and drinking mate with the other Argententians and Uruguayos was grounding, trying other food from around the world was tasty, the Holi festival behind the auditorium was colorful, and the concert rounding off the day was peaceful. The entire day, we were forced to be around each other, work with eachother, sing with eachother, and learn from eachother.
It is easy throughout the year to focus on specific groups and get attached, spending all your time with a select few, but days like this allow the community to step back and remind people of the mission of UWC and what that looks like. Sure, the next day things were pretty much the same, but even this one day was still a great contribution to our overall “UWC” experience and gave us a moment outside of the missions and purposes, to breathe.
Often at UWC we not only get attached to people, but also academics and because you simply cannot do your math homework while throwing handfuls of organic, washable, and biodegradable dyes, students get a well deserved break. I am reminded these days that there is more to life than math, UWC, or even the boundaries of my own identity and it is up to me to decide how to best respond to these feelings of mine. Spring day brings in outside family, friends, and guests, but at the same time feels like the community just gets smaller and more focussed, a paradox I will forever value.
