Ama Obeng-Sakyi, Grade 12
UWC Thailand
There are a lot of places on campus that are special to me. The kitchen, for obvious reasons, the art room, my dorm room, the lounge, and the office. I’ve had many memories in all those places, but there is a place particularly special to me.
There’s a swingset in a sandpit near one of the primary school buildings. There’s two sets of swings, and one big one, the seat is flat and is made from threads. I love going to the swings at night and just swinging, feeling the cold night air on my face, in my hair, as I swing up and down. I love the rush I feel as I go up in the air, almost weightless, before coming down quickly again.
Another reason I love that place is because I sometimes come with a friend, a close one. We would talk for hours, gazing at the stars above while swinging. We would be planning out our lives as G12's, what we would say the firsties when we finally met them, the places we would go and how much fun we’ll have. We’d talk about deep topics too, or just how we’re feeling lately. There’s just something so freeing about swinging and talking to a friend.
Because the swingset was made for kids, it’s a bit small, so I can’t sit on it as comfortably as I would prefer, but I don’t mind. The swingset is a bit isolated from the other buildings at the campus, like your own little world. The night sky blue black spread across the entire horizon, the soft sounds of insects and frogs as they go about their day, and if you listen really hard, you might even hear the sounds of cars passing on the road nearby.
It’s so solitary and dream-like, a perfect place to go think or have a chat. No one is around to disturb or interrupt you. Sometimes it’s nice to be alone with your thoughts, just to take a breather. That’s why I love the swings so much. I feel like I’m travelling between worlds just from swinging, and each time I go higher and higher up, as if trying to touch the moon itself, the stars winking down at me as I try. It almost feels like I’m floating, like I’m weightless, the wind pushing me along as I go. The smell of the vegetation around me, the newly bloomed lavender flowers, the orchids and the grass around. It’s extremely calming, and breathing all those smells in and out is addicting. I love this place, because it’s where I can bring out the child in me, and just be free. It’s a place dear to me, with so many memories of important conversations and more.
