Freya Aurora Van De Laak, Grade 11
UWC Maastricht
What can I say? 2020 has been a year to remember, through the good and the bad, but we’re finally turning over a new page with 2021. With that being said, I have a lot of people and things to be thankful for.
Thanks Mom. You have been incredibly supportive of me, and I don’t know what I would do without you. Even though I sometimes annoy you with way too many maths questions, I love how you always take the time to explain the concepts to me. You also make sure to keep me in check, which I cannot thank you enough for. I cannot thank you enough for keeping my room clean, helping make lunch for me and just sticking with me. You’re the best.
Thanks Dad. You are absolutely amazing and don’t seem to have a bad bone in your body. I know that it’s annoying to wake up at seven in the morning every day, but you don’t know how much I appreciate you bringing me to the sandwich shop every morning for my lunch. Trust me, the sandwich is always delicious, and I’ve been getting some compliments at school. I love how you get frustrated at me whenever I win one of our board game showdowns… which is every single time, and you know it.
Thanks friends. You made coming to UWC so much easier. When I first arrived here, I was alone and a timid person. I wouldn’t dare approach anyone and had to slowly build up my confidence, which you have all helped me do. I am extremely grateful to have a strong support system that is willing to listen to my problems, help me solve them and be with me every step of the way.
It has been an absolute pleasure being at UWCwith my friends, and I hope that these relationships will last for a lifetime. I’m especially glad to have gotten closer to a certain few people this year, and they are what make. We were going to give each other some Christmas gifts after the winter break, but alas, it seems like the pandemic has put that idea on the backburner for now.
Last but certainly not least, thanks UWC. You have given me a place to really feel at home, meet new people and pursue my dreams. I am immensely grateful to be in the position I am today, and I look forward to continuing my studies here and graduating with a smile on my face.
I am grateful for many things in my life. Despite 2020 not being the best year, I have managed to find happiness with those close to me.
2021, bring it on.
