A Student’s Response Towards The COVID-19 Situation:
The COVID-19 situation has caused many problems for the world. Countries have had to enable strict policies and procedures to limit the spread of the virus so that fewer people are at risk of being affected by it. Singapore is a country which has enabled strict policies and procedures which have been enforced throughout the country. Some of the measures which have been implemented by the government are the closure of all non-essential shops, the strict rules of staying at home during these dire times where you are only allowed to step out of your house to buy essential goods or to exercise alone. Finally, one significant measure which the government has implemented is the closure of the school and the enabling of home-based learning.
The students of UWCSEA East campus have been affected by these procedures and the cancellation of all international exams. They have had various responses towards how to deal with this terrifying pandemic, and many pupils have decided not to let this “Circuit breaker” be an excuse not to achieve their goals.
Throughout the grades, many learners from the campus feel that this COVID-19 pandemic is something that truly tests us individually. Some students think that the Coronavirus pandemic is a unique and surreal experience in their lives.
One student from Grade 10 felt that this situation is quite nerve-wracking and unbelievable that even with numerous medical advancements, this pandemic is difficult to control. He feels entirely confined at home, as he is unable to stick to his routine, both in and out of school. He also explains that one of the main challenges to this would be the lack of social interaction, in regards to both school and playing sports. He also states that he is trying to form a routine at home, which keeps him occupied. Through online school, he can occupy himself for most of the day and also during the evenings, he does try to exercise at home and sometimes walk to the supermarket for some fresh air. Despite the complications, after taking into consideration of this bizarre situation and how it is impacting his life, he strongly believes that he now has the time and ability to work on some of his goals for IB, his personal life in terms of spending time with his own family and finally the time to help others. He started saying “although there are many negatives to this situation, I feel that this is a time where we can build on yourself and help achieve goals which we would have felt that we would never be able to achieve due to the excuse of lack of time. I now feel that this tests us and gives us a chance for us to help us find ourselves but most importantly help us build and make us stronger”.
Ved Shivakumar, a grade 10 student who is an avid sportsman and history enthusiast, believes that this COVID-19 situation is no excuse for us to sit back and relax. In fact, it gives us the time to organise our priorities and work towards set goals which can enable us to be better students but more importantly, better humans. Ved has created achievable goals which he hopes to accomplish before he starts IB in august. His goals consist of 3 main types - Service, Activities and Academics. For Service, he has aimed to help local communities by donating goods and money to help the people who have been affected by the virus and aims, later on, to be helping people who are deemed not safe to go out due to their age and other health conditions where they might get affected. The goal of activities is a simple workout plan which enables him to improve and sustain his fitness so that he can help make the Annual SEASAC Tournament for football and hope that he can help bring the title back to UWC. Finally, the goal of Academics is a simple list of where he can prepare himself for the scary yet rewarding IB programme which he starts in August. He stated, “In my opinion, the service goal is the most important goal for me, this pandemic is an unfortunate situation, and it is a true test of our character; however, the biggest thing this virus tests is who we are and how we stand as a community, it shows the world if we are truly united together during these times”. Ved is one student of the many UWCSEA students who has decided that this virus will not allow it to test their true capabilities and themselves. Still, in fact this virus will make sure that these times are an advantage to improve our skills and our ability to help make our community united.
As the famous Bill Bailey said “In unity there is strength; We can move mountains when we’re united and enjoy life --- Without unity we are victims. Stay united”. This COVID-19 situation is unique and mind-boggling, and there are many things which we can learn from this pandemic. The first thing being is that the virus does not attack a particular group, it does not cause genocide, but in fact, the virus attacks and affects every single person in the world. The virus is a new thing for the planet, and this virus is being fought against . I am quite happy to say that there are students in UWCSEA that have taken into consideration the true severity of this virus but most importantly have understood how important it is for us to stick together, listen to the right authorities and do the right things so that we can make sure that all of this ends as soon as it can. There are many of us who know people who unfortunately have tested positive for this disease and as a result, we know how important it is for us not to drag each other but to stick and help each other in any such way. I have mentioned only two students who are not taking this pandemic as an excuse to stop them from growing and impacting their community, but I can tell you that these two students are not the only pupils that are doing something like this. Almost every student in UWCSEA is doing acts like this which are helping themselves grow and most importantly helping and enabling others to ensure that this battle is a short but sweet victory for us.
