Sarah Alfonso, Grade 11
UWCEA Arusha Campus
My name is Sarah Alfonso, an incoming D1 at UWCEA Arusha Campus. Before even joining the UWC, I have started to feel the positive vibes of being part of the UWC family. And it feels really amazing to join a family of different people.
I have lots of hopes and expectations about being part of the UWC family.
The first thing that attracted me to United World Colleges is the mission which is TO MAKE EDUCATION A FORCE TO UNITE PEOPLES, NATIONS, AND CULTURES FOR PEACE AND A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. So I expect to find myself amidst students and teachers from different walks of life, races and nations. All these people brought together by education and are working out on the unity of the entire world and promotion of peace for a sustainable future. I believe this is the need of every human, especially those who have had traumatic experiences in the past.
I hope to see that every person who passes through UWC schools is working towards unity of the entire world regardless of race, color or belief.
I also expect to meet different people, with different perspectives about life and smart learners with unique talents and way of approaching life challenges.
My expectations are not only limited to adventure and meeting new people but also acquiring quality education from the IBDP which which will develop me mentally and physically.
What excites me about UWCs mostly is the IBDP which includes Out Door pursuits and extracurricular programs such as swimming, sports and other healthy activities. Part of the OP such as mountaineering enable challenge of physical strength is also something amazing. Some of these activities will be my first
experience ever so am so happy to attend this program. In my previous syllabus, all that was involved was theory and lots of reading with limited practicals and extracurricular activities so am adventuring into IBDP.
Am also excited to be part of the CAS that will teach me how to serve others and enable me to be creative and innovative.
The other thing that excites me about joining UWC family is the fact that I will be exposed to a diverse community ,where I will learn a lot about different cultures and be able to come to term with there thinking, mindset and perspectives. This will give me a chance the be open-minded in order to understand them. I will not be restricted to my own mindset so I will get to learn a lot of interesting facts.
Truthfully I don’t feel nervous anymore about going to start a journey of studies with a bunch of strangers from different parts of the world. This is due to a few of the interactions I had with these people and it has made me know how welcoming and nice they actually are.
Previously, I was scared of leaving home to go study far away, as I am not used to staying away from my parents and leaving my usual lifestyle. Regardless of this I decided to take up the challenge of getting out of my comfort zone and facing life with my head held high.
The good and caring vibes I get from my the teachers and guardians at school without having met them, gives me enough courage to press on with my UWCEA journey and I know I will get sufficient help from them.
I hope to learn a lot from school such as research, essay writing a OP program since I have never attended any of the above but I believe they will be interesting. And in addition to that I want to learn how to be the best version of myself and be given a platform to fully express myself.
