Ved Shivakumar, Grade 10
UWCSEA (East)
I never thought that three whistle blows would start an experience which I will never forget. I remember sitting there at the assembly in the Main Hall, the last school assembly ever.
Our principal, Mr.Alchin standing there at the podium as he spoke the last words which then led to the whistle blows. As soon as the last words left his mouth, the doors slammed open, and the whistle blows began.
It was followed by drums, the samba band started to play one of their four songs which they created for the past year, and the party just started. With each step we took, 10000 claps were being heard. Every single teacher and student from the campus stood on the sides as we walked around the campus being applauded, cheered and celebrated. We walked up the stairs towards the main plaza, then towards the canteen, which was followed around the shop and then came back to where we all gathered in the main globe. Every year, the tears of god always fall upon that day; it goes all the way till the end until the sun shows again. That day unveiled hundreds of emotions. This walk was something more than just a simple walk; It represents
the students UWCSEA Journey, and it is a celebration to the end of their schooling year. The grand walk became an exciting and special way to conclude and end the last day of school for the students.
Ved Shivakumar, a student from grade 10 who has performed for every single grand walk since grade 6, stated: “I loved the grand walks, in my opinion, it was the best and most exciting performance we have ever had for the Samba band. I got to play the drums for hundreds of students, and I was very happy playing them but what made me happier was how happy they were”. I remember seeing a huge amount of emotions; It truly was a very emotional day. It was a happy and proud celebration.
One of the graduates stated “The grand walk was amazing, It was a great celebration of the end of my schooling journey, and I am thrilled with the fact that we had one. It was a great way to celebrate it with my friends and my teachers, and it is a day which I will never forget”. One other graduate also remembered that the grand walk made people who you never thought would cry, cry; however, they were not tears of sadness, but tears of joy.
As the final drum solo was done by a specific student of the samba band, the tears which are shed by god slowly finishes, and then the whole campus erupts into a loud and huge celebration towards what the grade twelves have done. Smiles were being spread around faces, and the sun slowly came out to express its true joy.
