Ama Obeng-Sakyi, Grade 12
UWC Thailand
A lot of people made a huge impact on me during my first year at UWC, but there were those who made an even bigger one, and they are those I’m closest to. I have a specific friend group I usually hang out with, 3 other girls all from different countries in Africa.
These girls have carried me through UWC, our late night shenanigans and even during class. One time, we spent 4 hours in the bathroom, from 11pm to 3am, dying one of the girls’ hair. She didn’t buy enough bleach or blue dye, so it came out more green than blue, but still a pretty colour. Another time we were so spontaneous that we created a youtube channel, which we plan to update regularly. It started with us making a video of us doing the slap challenge, then talking whilst doing the challenge, then switching to we should make a youtube channel. I love how close and spontaneous we all are, how we look out for each other and even notice the tiniest of changes. These girls have my heart, they opened it and tore my walls down, allowing me to let in more people.
Another person is a girl from Morocco. We had been talking online and became even closer when we finally got to school. I’m basically her unofficial roommate considering the number of nights I spend in her room. We talk about everything to anything, watch random stuff, and also talk about depressing stuff. I honestly can’t imagine my life without her, she’s one of the people I can just say the most ridiculous and absurd thing ever to, and she would reply with something even weirder.
There is another person, who I’m extremely grateful for. We facetimed all the time during online classes, and although we grew a bit distant when we got to UWC, I know I can still confide in them anytime, and they can in me. We usually have 3am ramen talks, where we randomly find each other in the kitchen preparing noodles, and just talk. I love our interactions and I’m so grateful for their friendship. All these aforementioned people entered my life and made it better.
I made other close friends but I can’t talk about them all, or this article will become too long. They made me realise how diverse UWC is, and how you can find your twin or soulmate (in terms of friendship) in someone you’d never thought you’d meet from a country you know you’ll never go to. UWC brought us together, it’s only because of the school I was able to meet all these amazing people and have adventures with them.
From the weird ones who I just relate to, to those who cry with me, to those I have the best fun with. I don’t think I’m the same person I was before I went to UWC. I know I’m more outspoken, because I always had my friends who backed me up and encouraged me to share my opinion. I’m not as shy as I was, because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to meet and become friends with these people. UWC is meant to bring out the leader in you, and the friends you make, are there to help you with your journey, because that’s what they did for me.
