Esraa Alkhateeb, Grade 11
UWC Mostar
Being a UWC student is not just being part of a school, is being part of a movement that has as goal having a positive impact in the world. This means that there are some values that we take as a base of our daily lives, for making ourselves authors of change. As a UWC student, I totally believe in them, and even though I am a new member of this movement, I really get identified by them due to the fact they line up with my personal beliefs. I’m pretty certain that this contributed to me becoming a UWC student, which makes me happy because now I am part of a movement that fights for the same I do.
The biggest bases of UWC set of values according to me are respect to nature, personal responsibility, and sustainability in all its levels, from ecology to social purposes, like poverty. From these pillars, all the other values UWC promotes come into the scene. The principal value I can mention right now is cooperation while we are here at UWC and beyond, now through our cases and classes. But in order to make a real change in the world, values can’t be applied alone, strong interconnection between values need to be made. One of those strong connections should be done between innovation and cooperation. That combination should be able to produce projects and ideas that last for a long time, not just in UWC but in our respective societies. The classes help us to get a better understanding and knowledge about the world issues, and we try to ask ourselves how can we fix them and how our daily lifestyle can have an impact in those issues, thanks to the focus classes in UWC have.
But what I think is more important is how the two years I will be studying IB will help me to decide what do I want to do in the future, and in what way I can contribute to the UWC mission in my very own way. I believe that changing the future needs us to be mature and conscious, and also to stay on our path on trying to build a better future, so that the next generations continue with our work.
