What does UWC really stand for?

Maira Gupta, Grade 11
UWCSEA East Campus

Some people come into our lives, and leave us a changed person. They have a lasting effect on us that helps to shape the way we are, the way we think, the way we view other things and people. There are many people who have had a significant and lasting impact on my life. One such person at UWCSEA East is our head of grade.

She has been a very integral part of my UWC journey as I joined in grade 9 as a new student. As I was joining an array of different school clubs and leadership teams that interested me, I was selected for a position in the Student Voice team- a group of representatives that come together to express the concerns of the student body, communicate those to the head of grade, and brainstorm solutions to the same. The first meeting of the student voice was the first time that I had a face to face, proper interaction with our head of grade.

Her positive aura, willingness to help everyone around and aim to bring everyone together truly reflected in her personality and behaviour. She was able to quickly connect with all of us students who she had just now met and was extra helpful to new students as they settled in.

This interaction with her instantly allowed me to realise that UWC is a safe place where the teachers and faculty members really want their students to grow in a holistic way and feel well-integrated in the student community. I had heard many times that UWC focuses heavily on providing students a holistic education- and these were the moments I had realised, experienced it. I was able to understand that the focus is definitely academics, but it's much wider than that and goes far and beyond to leadership, outdoor activities, service, collaboration etc.

As more of the student voice team meetings took place, I also realised another wonderful aspect of UWC- it valued the voices of its students over everything else. In these meetings, as representatives we fed-back to the head of grade regarding how the PSE (personal and social education) units were, and how they could be made better. She took our suggestions and ideas with a smile on her face and made her best efforts to ensure that the following units were amended to include the changes we asked for.

Through these multiple interactions, I was able to learn that UWC is truly a wonderful place to be and grow in the student years of one's life. I am thankful for this opportunity and faculty members like our head of grade who have significantly played a key role in my journey and allowed me to realise what UWC truly stands for.
